Even though the mismatched-buddy cop movie has been done many times and may not need a parody The Other Guys still manages to surprise audiences. The concept behind it makes it feel like it would have missed the mark completely.
Will Ferrell often plays characters who are buffoons but are also very confident in themselves and clueless about the fact that they are a joke? So it is shocking to see him step out of his comfort zone in a film. In the meantime, Mark Wahlberg plays a hotheaded and tough character and seems to enjoy changing his usual portrayal of screen characters. He certainly seems to be getting a kick from it. The other joke that is great and works is Ferrell screaming lyrics to the Little River Band tune while driving to a crime scene. That is truly comical.
The movie tries to achieve a lot and accomplishes most of its goals. This formulation of characters feels fresh. The Other Guys stand out from the rest. The film certainly loses some of its charm in the last third, and if I am honest, could have done without the slide-show style presentation over the closing credits. Powerpoint slides talking about corporate greed aren’t really needed since we are well aware it exists. In addition to that, the ending felt too drawn out from the rest of the movie. Regardless, most of the movie is entertaining.
The film’s successful outcome can be attributed to its detailed action sequences. The chases and shootouts that occur in New York City, for example, feature detailed crafting which makes the cliche that the antagonists fire copious amounts of automatic gunfire and still miss their targets quite believable. Even while hovering in a helicopter, the characters do manage to miss our heroes.
Artfully choreographed slow-motion shooting, accompanied by bullets and bodies, also pays homage to John Woo. This scene takes place in a glassed-off conference room containing documents. The fact that this and many other scenes are choreographed so skillfully and not presented in a cartoonish manner makes this method much more effective.
Like the action, the comedy is also deadpan. The jokes featured in the film are self-aware, but not at all sarcastic. We have not painted a ridiculous, over-the-top picture like one would find in Scary Movie, this particular method is more appealing. The hasty pop culture references are seamlessly incorporated and do not conflict with the overall story. The Other Guys, much like Ferrell’s learned works with Adam McKay’s stepbrothers, Anchorman, Burgundy, and Talladega as well as with fewer triumphs, contains a realistic base that makes the over-the-top moments much easier to disguise.
In the film, Ferrell stars as Allen Gamble, a New York police detective who behaves like a detective but dresses like an accountant. He prefers to work from his desk, but he is always eager to offer his coworkers plenty of motivation. His partner, Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg), is more experienced and used to patrolling the streets but is currently stuck behind a desk with Allen due to an accidental shooting.
Hotshot, city detectives (Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson, who seem larger than life) stand out by working the most publicized cases. Allen and Terry, however, manage to uncover something that looks suspicious regarding corporate financial strategist David Ershon (Steve Coogan), who is essentially a British version of Bernie Madoff. Coogan injects his specific dry humor into the cast, which also includes Michael Keaton, Rob Riggle, and Eva Mendes. Coogan is definitely up for the challenge with this strong cast.
Speaking of Mendes, she is integral to a running joke which, surprisingly, is effective the entire time. We will not go into further detail. You really ought to see and meet these people yourself.
