THE BLACKBURN ASYLUM Lauro Chartrand.
Five friends are stuck in an Alaskan ghost town running low on gas, so they decide to kill some time by checking out the mine where an old asylum once was.
As noted in the plot summary, this film is another entry in the growing case of “industrial horror” that is, the combination of clichéd elements from different horror films into a single movie. This one was so egregious that I expected someone to do the humorous self-knowing thing that is so common these days, but no such luck. In today’s world of postmodern horror, it is quite daring to have avoided ever letting the camp tone of the movie creep into the movie. I do think that at least a smidge of more typical humor would have gone a long way, but I understand that so many cliches allow it to be completely straight-faced with no need for laughter and instead a source of horror.
With that being said, some of the horrific imagery included in the movie is shocking and surprising, and the brutal violence of the story even resonates with those who are hesitant towards slasher films. I was particularly impressed with the realism of these kills, which is not always present in modern-day movies. In addition to the props, the makeup effects were also very well done and showed how much effort was put into this movie’s realistic violence. This makes the movie a treat for fans of detailed gore as well as makeup effects.
As with its original predecessors, There’s a super thin plot this time too, featuring some really poorly constructed dialogues and cliched roles. This may seem harsh, but it’s certainly nothing new in the world of slasher movies and video games, which are chock full of Lawrence Welles’s broad caricatures. There is always room for improvement, and the incumbent lines within the genre gave the actors the freedom to shine. This leads me to state that there are no moving or subtle performances, but they definitely deserve commendations for creating perfectly suitable lines to the sensibilities of the project.
To finish my thoughts on this review, let me highlight my favorite parts, which are the end credits and the post-credits bloopers. Am I the only one who wants to know which movie had, Cast listed in order of death, in the credits? The grip crew also gets a laugh in my book for being described as These guys carried a lot of crap up and down the stairs. Finding some bloopers with the great Robbins sisters in the end credits was quite a surprise. The humorous outtakes, mixed with the funny credits, created a clever twist to the film and served as a relief from the standard routine jokes in the feature. I would recommend everyone watching the film take the time to sit through the credits so that they do not miss these gems.
In conclusion, the blended realism and makeup effects, in addition to the slasher premise rooted in horror flicks of the 80s, will surely please fans of this genre. Even though it does not expand on the concept in any major fashion, it offers good production work with a solid performance by the cast, who help extract the value of the film up to its credits and outtakes. This picture is sure to appeal to fans alike of MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981) and WRONG TURN (2003).
