A new horror anthology seems to be released every month and one of the latest is Tales From the Other Side. This one is very low budget which is something I’m used to and with this being yet another anthology horror film, I was happy to give it a go.
With one wraparound segment and six ‘tales’, there’s plenty of material here to see. So let’s get straight into the first proper tale. ‘Petrified Boy’ at least starts off with a creepy story that revolves around a tour of a circus and its attraction known as the petrified boy. The issue is the boy is more of a doll and does not move and a very bad CGI ending is presented.
Next up is ‘Flicker’. Although predictable, I at least liked the story here as we see an amateur filmmaker get hired to make and edit funeral videos for a funeral video maker. It had a bit of Archive 81 (Netflix show) vibe to it and it felt like something that has the potential to make a good full feature. Also features a brief appearance from Vernon Wells.
The third tale ‘Crystal Ball’ revolves around a married couple on the verge of a crumbling relationship. They go on to steal a crystal ball owned by a fortune teller. The husband seems not too keen, and as the story develops, maybe he was right. It is another short which has certain great ideas but does not fully meet its expectation.
Number four is called ‘Either/Or’ and I daresay, it is one of the more fascinating segments. Elijah is currently stationed in an asylum and thinks that God told him to eliminate the members of his family. The filmmakers have the clinical white asylum setting down very well. And I thought it proceeds in a more interesting way (there are such ideas in the new season of Stranger Things) but still, it appears as though it is the beginning of something and just as it finishes.
Fifth in the line up is ‘Blood Red’. The ‘creepy artist/painting’ does seem to be somewhat of a sub-genre and Blood Red does bear some semblance to it. There are murder attempts that seek to enhance the value of the works of an emerging artist. While a tad bit predictable, it does contain the only significant blood and gore in the entire movie but it did not captivate me.
The last segment titled ‘Krampus Vs Elf’ is the worst out of all of them! This is Christmas horror at its most laughable. Don’t presume that these two supernatural Christmas creatures will engage in an epic fight, instead you will be rewarded with what can only be described as a set of stationary photos of a ‘fight’. Terribly disappointing, but I wasn’t expecting much.
