Clint Browning (The Terminators) stars as street racer Johnny Wayne. Wayne has spent the past five years in prison due to a fatal accident in which he caused. Naughty Parole Officer Briggs(Crider), offers Johnny to race with the profits split 70:30, as if she was offering him a choice. Johnny dutifully works at Red’s garage(Robert Pike Daniel) with a coworker, Steve(Dustin Fitzsimons), and during the day. While Red does resemble Donald Trump, he is the “funniest character” in the movie while simultaneously being old and grumpy.
Johnny is introduced to some new characters all while doing his community service at the local clinic. These include Kelly(Dorothy Drury), a sister to a crippled kid named Danny(Connor Clayton), and Teddy, a physiotherapist who used to play Katya, the warrior woman in Dragonquest(Jennifer Dorogi). Romance begins to blossom between Johnny and Kelly until he reveals that he was the reason why Danny is crippled. With Red’s BMW, Johnny is forced to race when he borrows it without permission. Red fires him when he figures it out, but luckily, Johnny has an assistant minivan that doesn’t need to be tricked out. However, while he was able to win the race, he quickly ended up losing the car before crawling back to Red for help.
Upon listening to what Johnny’s problems were, Red takes a step further and decides to train Johnny by using Go-karts. Along with that, he also gifts Johnny a car. It is a nice car for a do-it-yourself project. Perhaps it is missing some parts such as wheels and an engine. If Johnny does not win the race, Briggs will make sure Kelly suffers. To become a street racing champion, he has to defeat his old rival Mickey (Jason Ellefson).
The Asylum attempts to combine Speed Racer and The Fast and the Furious, but completely misses the point of either film. The most painful aspects of the movie are the horrible performances and the monotone narration. The budget is remarkably low, as one of the cars from the last race is likely worth more than the budget of the film. Most of the boring racing sequences are shot on a single road somewhere in a desert. Not too many of these boring sequences are shown, which is a relief. Nevertheless, the drama is a tad bit greater than what was anticipated (but not by much). There were many areas where it could have improved, including the dialogue, the racing scenes, and the acting. At this point, it seems like a wasted opportunity, especially since the story seems to try to mimic drama cinema.
