I think I stumbled upon this movie while I was trying to look for some documentaries on my favorite topics: weather and natural disasters. Since I believed this was somewhat related to that topic at a sensible level, I queued it up. All I can say is that it goes to show one must read those short blurbs more carefully.

Kelly McGillis plays Jamie Marshall. She is a storm chaser along with her husband, Jim. During a very bad storm, Jim finds himself in a plane which gets hit by Lightning, killing him.

When a tornado comes to Colorado, she is called over to witness the situation and check the storm further. She meets Will Stanton (played by Wolf Larson), who is a FEMA field director trying to assist the town and people rendered homeless due to the storm. Like so many other people in novels, these two do not quite like each other so one can be pretty sure where their story is headed. Jamie is investigating the storm’s path, and she is made to work with Will.

Because Jamie could not find a good and decent room to stay in the town, she chooses to stay outdoors. While camping with her instruments, Jamie picks up some strange readings as another storm appears to be brewing. She later finds out that there is a site operated in secrecy by the Energy Department. When she attempts to get closer to the sight, she is pursued.

The script can be described as somewhat monotonous but there are a few fine details. The ‘aha’ moment where Jamie attempts to figure out the cause of the storm seems to be the main twist in the series but, unfortunately, their relationship with Will is frankly, too predictable. The one surprise factor is where there are no surprises.

The main problem is that regardless of the name Storm Chasers, it is obvious that the book has romance written all over it, which is set against a backdrop of romance over the natural disaster. It’s Speed. It’s Twister. It’s every movie that has had romance blooming amidst obscenity. The plus side is, they do it with finesse.

Kelly McGillis is ok in her part. She manages to be believable and does the best she can. I just question why she would take such roles. I had never seen Wolf Larson before, but he is fine as the muscle bound beauty who gets it on with the woman who has serious issues. He also handles some other situations with another woman and does it with some degree of skill, but he looked to me at times as though he understood how off all this relationship juggling was to the plot. So is the case with the supporting cast. Liz Torres and Adrian Zed and James MacArthur are the names which some may recognize.

The effects aren’t all that impressive and it is blatantly clear that this is a low budget film. The scenes of the “fakest storms ever” billowing in are quite obviously CGI. It looks more bogus than the most of the Jurassic Park dinosaurs. Then it became apparent that bottom relationship sidebar had probably been elaborated to compensate for the missing special effects budget. Come on, you already hired the actors for the job, so sprinkle a little around here and there and massacre the scenes that require special effects.

Storm Chasers is the movie no one must watch. The performances by the actors are the only good thing about this movie, they try their best with the material they’re given. The writing is just too pathetic. It does deviate from its titular subject far too much to have any credibility as a disaster film, and the romance is so utterly cliché. There’s server absolutely no reason to watch it.
