Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple

What is cool is the fact that Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven, aka Miami Steve, was the trusted advisor of both Bruce Springsteen, the boss himself, and Tony Soprano, the boss from the mafia families on New Jersey’s cruise line area. They were both amazing men who wanted to be regarded in pop culture.

In the entertaining, comprehensive, and star-studded HBO documentary, which is about to crown on Saturday, titled “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple”, his associations with other distinguished people in the movie, such as Stevie Van Zandt and the Asbury Jukes, a Bronx girl he divorced long ago, join the reminiscence of other familiar relationships and events. Stevie’s long-standing history of achievements has led him from sole projects to two Sirius/XM channels to prominent and enduring political engagements. Since the documentary’s total duration reaches 2 hours and 27 minutes, it is hardly surprising. The life of Van Zandt, 73, is far too active to be crammed into 60 minutes or so.

Bill Teck directed “Disciple”, which talks to Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Southside Johnny, Jackson Browne, and Eddie Vedder among others, but also has a whole lot of archival photographs and videos for good measure. In those early concerts in New Jersey where Van Zandt and Springsteen were playing in different bands, it is fascinating to realize how often someone had a still or a movie camera. Springsteen remembers his first encounter with Van Zandt at a club in Middletown, New Jersey: “He wore this enormous paisley tie. He instantly became my brother in rock ‘n’ roll”.

Van Zandt is seen wearing his signature scarf and pirate-themed clothing while in attendance and explains how he thinks it’s important, but is lovingly irreverent towards himself by saying that once he joined Springsteen, he thought their partnership would be equal: “In the 80s everything started to change and I left the band just as they were about to explode. It was a huge mistake because everything was finally falling into place after all those years”.

Amid sequences that depict the defining aspects of Van Zandt’s career start for example the anti-apartheid campaign that motivated him to write the 1985 protest song Sun City, there is an insight into his personal life, in particular, his marriage to Maureen Van Zandt whom little Richard married and who played Gabriella, while his wife was Silvio Dante in the soap The Sopranos, which ran for several years in the US.Cυ.

Chase claims that Jerry killed Rascal with an introduction and together when he introduced Jackson Stevens into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, he was tremendously prompted to shift him on the latest show he was producing. Lance Freed who is the son of the iconic DJ Alan Freed and a music publisher who knows Van Zandt extremely well recollects engaging him in a dispute over appearing on reality TV, arguing with Van Zandt. R”- You cannot be on television to be famous. Donny and Marie are the best.

To which Van said; well, so am I, broke. Spoiler: He turned out alright with Stevie’s situation and that Television show, heavens be praised. And also, he’s still a king rock and roll idol.
