Stargate is one of those movies in which a soldier is able to get “zapped” to the “other side of the universe” through a ‘kaleidoscope’, steps into the temple of another world and exclaims, “What a rush!.” Not only does Stargate include the sun god Ra, who has developed the capacity to go anywhere in the universe within seconds and has the need for slaves to assist in the construction of his pyramids. It is also where a Nubian princess is offered up to guests of earth to service them. Do not tell me there are no correlations. Ed Wood, the worst director in the world, is said to have been cast for Stargate. The view opens up with the caption Middle Egypt, 1928. Researchers discover an archeological find that makes history. But today, Professor Daniel Jackson, who looks like an Egyptian, is arguing with experts in her field until they walk out after two sentences.

Jackson, the borderline lunatic, is quite evidently the one the Government of the United States would need to communicate the translation of the hieroglyphs on the classified find of the expedition in 1928 an enormous circle of carved stones, which resemble a stargate, left behind by the ancient builders of the pyramids. Naturally, Jackson and Col. Jack O’Neil, played by Kurt Russell , are the ones to enter the gate, leading a bunch of gun wielding soldiers.

The time travel and space travel is done via technological aid albeit with not quite the elegance that the time travel was done in ‘2001’. On the other end, the visitors from Earth discover a barren desert planet, ruled by the god Ra played by Jaye Davidson, who was better known for his role in The Crying Game. Here, he is decked out in attire that resembles a combination of pharaoh and a las vegas showgirl, and controls an intriguing civilization that has space shuttles that land on top of pyramids, but the people live like nomads more similar to those in Lawrence of Arabia. His voice has been modified by a synthesiser to sound more like a husky cold elevator voice.

Let’s assume there is a stargate that has been found that transports a person in the blink of an eye to a different planet in the universe but comes with the ability to be used by humans only. What does this warrant? Excitement? Drive? The desire to learn more? No to any of these actually. Col. O’Neil’s commands are: ‘See if there are any threats and if there is then destroy the stargate.’ The movie is so devoid of any and everything even remotely related to fascination that it launches across the breadth of the entire universe and then back to a fight between the heroes and the villains while the colonel hangs a bomb that is “TICKING.” (As with all cinematic bombs, it is outfitted with a huge red electronic device that displays the time remaining while the bomb beeps). Stargate’ is like a movie made by a student who is doing filming lessons. The task: Come up with the most absurd storyline and turn it into an action monger as soon as you can, make sure it contains a sun god Ra and it includes the blowing up of something into pieces
