South Of Hope Street, which is crafted by Jane Spencer has a very unique style. Unlike a lot of films out there, it doesn’t revolve around a story, instead, it is a dramatic science fiction mystery that is filmed unusually. This places it closer to Brazil in terms of how away from reality it feels, albeit toned down. One question still lingers: does this strange nature attract viewers, or rather, make them feel apathetic?
Denise (Tanna Frederick) fights daily battles. Her roommate is pushing her out of the tiny area within the room and into another apartment to accommodate a new ‘friend’. As an avid poetry lover, her wardrobe choices along with her footwear selections considerably decrease the chances of getting a job. In addition, she refuses to take the anti-nausea medication that would certainly help her cope with this peculiar world. What troubles her the most, though, is that only Denise is able to see the disaster that lies in the sky. There is, however, Tom (Judd Nelson) and a small circle who seem to have found a solution to this perplexing world where motives and loyalties drift, and where an escape route to this universe seems possible.
In the South of Hope Street, every frame feels like paint on a canvas. Most scenes of this movie feature bright colors, although some parts do include some black & white which adds a unique feel. The City’s color cinematography is exceedingly gritty, embodying the filth that lies beneath the surface of the shiniest areas. The black and white parts, on the other hand, bring about a feeling of solace and togetherness, along with warmth. Frank Glencairn, the director of photography, brilliantly captures Denise’s moods throughout the frame.
Denise is best portrayed as a woman of good nature but deeply confused and misunderstood by Frederick. One minute she is sitting on a couch begging someone to stay, the next she is throwing a book at someone. The actor’s performance made both emotions seem perfectly rational. Nelson’s calm demeanor allows everyone viewing to understand the jigsaw of the universe and begin putting the pieces together. Benjamin Flowers is played by Michael Madsen, who is his immensely charming but strange self. Almost half the movie through he gets the biggest laugh with ease
South Of Hope Street has a mesmerizing dream-like quality to it that is hard to define, but is pleasing and surprising. The actors are very good and the scenery is striking. The themes of the movie are used in a deeply impactful way, and as always, the cast is good. So sit back, relax, and enjoy.
