Since the Mothman Festival is coming up, I’ve been in a major cryptid mood. I’ve enjoyed the subject of cryptozoology for some time now, but upon my recent visits to Point Pleasant, it’s safe to say I’ve become a little more obsessed. Well, as I was preparing for the setup for the Horror Society/Wild Eye Releasing booth, I decided to try and look for other films focusing on Bigfoot, Mothman, and Braxton County Monster and I came across a Facebook page for something family thriller called ‘Something in the Woods’. This is a film I was looking for, so I got in touch with them. Thankfully, they were kind enough to send me a link to an online screener. Since I had to review ‘Mountain Devil’ I knew I was going to do a bigfoot double feature. So thank you to the people behind ‘Something in the Woods’ for making it possible for me to check the film out for the site!
The story centers around John Hartman and his family, who live in a small town that is surrounded by forests. He is a foreman at a logging company that has been making great progress in the logging business. However, things get dark when John witnesses a hairy creature that walks on two legs around his property.
Every time he tries to capture the creature, it stays just out of reach. It’s when he discovers that the creature has been watching his young son that he resolves to kill it before it destroys the family.
Something in the Woods is not what you would consider a traditional horror film. This dark thriller, in fact, seems to target children. Regardless, it is still entertaining for the avid horror buff or a cryptid fan.
To my surprise, the acting was good on this one. It is not uncommon for the budget of a film to determine the level of talent, but this film was blessed with an awesome cast no matter the budget. David Ford the director is marvelous as the main actor of the film. He is an imposing figure and has that nurturing appeal that people expect from a father. He takes over his scenes and propels the narrative forward. The supporting cast is just as superb and I can’t find the right words to describe how good they were. For the topic at hand, the story is great but this one is a bit of a slower burner.
I believe the pacing for this one is especially slow, and while the character development and overarching story are very well executed, it could benefit from a little bit more action or story-focused scenes spread across the film.
This one is not akin to The Big F or any other bigfoot flics in the sense that it does not emphasize gore and bloodshed. Rather, Something in the Woods provides viewers with great storytelling within a creature feature aesthetic. It is fair to say that Something in the Woods is not your typical horror movie. However, fans of ‘Bigfoot’ as well as thrillers will surely appreciate it.
