When hearing the word “Mycho”, the first thought that comes to mine is ‘bold’, which seems to coincide with the tasks the brand delves in. The term ‘bold’ captures their approach, including when dealing with color schemes, which is especially true on a more aesthetic level. Mycho enjoys adopting an in-your-face style: As I mentioned about the original Slasher House, MJ Dixon, the writer and director, has never grasped the idea ‘red and green should never be seen,’ and because of that, the image displayed above depicts him churning those colors out once again. Also, boldness is a trait that seems to be overly generous for him, Anna McCarthy, his producer, and all of them at Mycho Entertainment. It truly does take gusto to make movies with practically no budget while undertaking several roles and recruiting countless others ready to devote unpaid blood, sweat, and tears to this project. But, with all that, it is a truly daring endeavor to attempt to build a multi-universe of expectations about the Mycho brand at this level of film making, considering that not even half a Marvel budget is used for a shirtless scene where baby oil is slathered onto actors. Yes, the word does seem fit.

Slasher House II is the fifth installment in the Mychoverse and follows Slasher House from 2012, Legacy of Thorn from 2014, and Hollower and Cleaver: Rise of the Killer Clown from 2015. It’s safe to assume that this is their boldest film because it is action packed which most of their other films lack. The heroine, Red, is back once again. Francesca Louise White has taken the role that was previously played by Eleanor James. Unlike the previous movie where Red awoke from amnesia and had to figure out her life, in this film the audience is presented with a fully-fledged ‘kick-ass’ version of her and a much wider range of enemies. The enemies now include a panda masked, stripper-killing maniac, reanimated skeletons, and an army of dolls. Each enemy Red encounters brings her closer to solving the mystery behind the organisation that made these killers for their own sinister purposes. However, as with every movie, there are twists to the story.

slasher-house-2Oh, here it comes, for it is the very reason why Slasher House II tries its best to follow the curves and loops to find its way out of the overhead tunnels and pipes. I am not going to be a spoiler, but to be honest, and as someone who has watched all the Mychoverse films (and indeed reviewed them), I sometimes struggle to remember who is who and what is what, and things not being entirely transversal doesn’t assist matters either. However, even though Dixon does seem interested in expanding the scope of his mythology, the base focus appears to always be on trying to pay tribute to the films that formed his creative bedrock and as with his older works, it is this earnest spirit behind these tributes that truly gives it all a charm. The impressive leading actress White does bring a fair lot more attitude to the table than her predecessor, even if, as a writer, Dixon has always had a knack for self-consciously cheesy one-liners and not all of her co-stars are particularly comfortable delivering dialogue (a universal issue among microbudget indies).

While the earlier Mychoverse films tend to gravitate towards the 80s horror aesthetic, there is more of a late 90s / early millennial vibe here as the film adopts an action-horror approach similar to the Blade, Underworld and Resident Evil franchises – although, once again, this is clearly a challenge due to how much the budget of this film pales in comparison to those movies. Fortunately, White seems to be just as skilled with his hands as he is with weapons, and goes toe to toe with notably skilled martial artists in certain scenes. Slasher House II is not going to be mistaken for The Raid, but it does have a few worthy punch-ups. Outside of these moments, some real ultra-low budget roughness is definitely all part of the fun, especially in a graveyard fight with a charmingly cheap skeleton puppet.
