Trent Williams is considered the highest paid left tackle within the history NFL, owing to his nine Pro Bowl selections. The athlete also owns several low income apartment complexes and a gym in Houston, Texas. Even casual football fans have heard of Williams. However, many have not heard how an all star athlete in 2019 was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was estimated to not live much longer. Silverback: The Trent Williams Story is the engaging story about the star athlete and both his ups and downs in life.
I value everyone’s perspective when it comes to Jared Zwerling’s film, but the most profound part of the documentary is Williams himself. It begins with the NFL star reminscing about his childhood and the challenges he had to endure whilst growing up, but not in a way that is normally expected. Williams accepts that life is difficult, and has a point in stressing that many people are able to face simliar challenges in life. Hence, he received no compassion from himself or his family, and he does not consider himself better than the people he spent his youth with. Being able to understand compassion above self pity, which some people do sometimes, is a gracious lesson to learn about this all star athlete.
One of the things that Trent Williams was not particularly comfortable making public was that he was diagnosed with cancer. Naturally, this caused some friction between him and the Washington Football Team (Redskins at the time). This is something which has tended to escape the attention of the public, and followers of the athlete, the football team, or the sport have at times struggled to appreciate the magnitude of his life circumstances at that particular era. Swerling attempts to put Williams, the football player, in touch with ordinary reality as an individual who has gone through everything else. He is, after all, a very large figure in the world of football and Zwerling does a marvelous job at achieving this.
As the movie goes on, it begins to uncover Williams’s off-the-field activities, including his ambassadorial role with the Sarcoma Foundation of America. To him, surviving cancer is not enough there’s more that needs to be done. People like him are fortunate enough to have access to effective treatment, but far too many do not and he’s deeply appreciative of the position he’s been put in. This is where the SFA comes in; they are a non-profit organization committed to finding better therapies for those with cancer, and the guidance from people like him will help them achieve that goal.
One of the reasons that Silverback: The Trent Williams Story is so effective in getting the word across is that it is able to build a context regarding the key players of a certain subject. For instance, in the story of Willams, Adrian Peterson, Vernon Davis, and Adam Schefter all have some part to play. Behind the scenes, including the sport, these goliaths of football add value to the Williams story’s comprehension. They do not only portray the sport but explain its subtleties in parts of the world where it is not so popular and accepted.
Coming back, Williams is a rare athlete with a story that everyone, including those who are not into sports would deeply admire. Even more importantly, the documentary makes the viewers feel that Williams is one of them. The gradual connection the viewers build with Williams, along with the magnificent journey he goes through, is touching, and the makers of the film do an incredible job of portraying his story to the world. Zwerling tells an interesting story by showing who Williams really is and what he looks like behind the curtains.
