Shadow Fighters is about young Regie who is living with his mother in a rough neighborhood after the untimely death of his brother. His brother was murdered and the same people who harassed him are now trying to pull him into drug dealing. At 16 years old, Regie encounters a skilled homeless boxer who becomes his mentor, teaching him how to defend himself. Their relationship grows with time and as the story unfolds, more layers about the boxer’s life and the reason he is homeless are revealed.
The premise of Shadow Fighter is incredible and very intriguing but strangely does not follow some overly cliched plot devices. The relationships between some characters do not blossom the way one would expect. In the end, viewers are left wanting just the right amount of closure without truly getting a happy ending. It is a refreshing premise compared to other films that sugarcoat the conclusion.
The costumes and sets of Shadow Fighter lack flair and detail. This is an appropriate choice considering the plot. Still, it has its negative side. Because there are no props to divert the viewer’s focus, the attention is entirely on the performance. Reggie (Omar Brunson) and the boxer (Steve Daron) sure do deliver solid efforts. Reynolds Burt is also well executed. But most of these characters take the more binary approach and fall into cliche. Overall, there is an excess in performance and poor pacing of the dialogue. The film also falls prey to the other approach of being too straightforward on occasion. With Shadow Boxer, the impact would be too pronounced if there were fewer pointers and more ambiguity.
In Shadow Fighter, the characters’ investment as the viewers may be questionable due to their inadequacies. Yet, the strong points of the film will most likely get the viewers to the closing credits.
In total, this story of loss, antagonists, and boxing has some wins as well as defeats. It has strong elements that run through the entire movie. That said, there are places where the film slightly messes up. At the same time, it is funny and will probably appeal to the older teenage demographic, even if it does not set the world on fire.
