The singular Tonny Tulleners stars as Agent “Steve Woods” and has a brilliantly wooden portrayal, but what else could you expect? As a matter of fact, he is not an actor whatsoever – he is a karate champion who has beaten Chuck Norris and has a cool agent codename ‘Scorpion.’ Rest assured, you do not want to be stung by this guy.
Tonny himself is also still able to throw his weight around, which is where the action ‘kicks off.’ For unknown reasons, but with the addition of a cool mustache chucked in with a nylon jacket alongside brown bellbottom boots, he looks effortlessly stylish. Tonny then proceeds to inject himself into a barroom brawl in Spain. After a string of chaotic location changes, alternating between Spain, the Netherlands, Hawaii, and finally Los Angeles, the story starts.
The plot is as relevant now as it was back in 1986 when the movie was showcased, and that is why ‘Scorpion’ is here to save the day. He is the only man who can stop the group of terrorists that have taken an airplane hostage.
A good plot point is when Woods’ boss, who bears striking resemblance to Phil Rizzuto uncannily instructs him to wear shorts while boarding the airplane that has already been hijacked. It is still on the runway, and the plane is filled with hostages. The reason for this is that the terrorists will see he is not carrying a gun. This is exactly how he was able to change from pants to white short shorts. Most of the elite group of terrorists that hijacked the planes are taken care of swiftly. However, the primary terrorist ‘Faued’ has been spared causing that leaves us with a 90-minute game of cat & mouse or ‘Tonny’ to begin.
A thin, blond-headed man and his black accomplice stalk Tonny and, unfortunately for them, get thrashed by him. In one of the several brawls however, his partner and childhood friend bites the dust. While reminiscing remorseful events, we can see a flashback of Tonny in the park alongside his friend, where they strive to push over a statue. Although it is sad, these memories make it painfully obvious that the strength he built around himself was insufficient to save his friend later in life. There are few things that Tonny is embarrassed about, and what breaks him is hearing that he’s a warrior deep down inside, but has a soft heart (and voice) too. His new partner silently, without an explanation, pulls out a wooden recorder and starts playing a miserable melody. A sad casting decision, as this joker pales in comparison to Tonny’s dead partner.
Coincidentally, one of the highlights of the film is the music. It was composed, without a doubt, by either a keytared man with a serious case of ’keytar face’ or Tulleners as he calmly demolishes the enemies with exemplary elegance.
