Robowoman is one of the most poorly received films ever. Infact, it was awarded Least Like the Poster at the 2021 film awards. It almost seemed as though a child had put it together considering it was a low budget movie – like all the other films from the same production. The only benefactor of the movie is that it at least had a poster which was more appealing than other movies from the same production. Hellfire for instance was so horrbile that Robowoman seemed like a Oscar winning film in comparision. Together with Demon Wind, as well as review for movies like Nemesis 5 The New Model, it is better off being forgotten. It is simply not worth wasting your time on.
Robowoman starts off in the year 2024 and in Los Angeles. They delve into black markets where people with all manners of illnesses go to get ‘cured’ by doctors looking to make a quick buck. All hope seems lost for Vivica Stevens as she is kidnapped, raped, and left to die. The ‘dodgy’ doctor saves her and treats her with cybernetics, amoung them a robo arm. While recovering she is then forced to deal with the moral implications of her actions that stem from her desire for revenge against her abuser and other perpetrators.
Michaels was the first time she had undergone surgery (‘her first shoulder surgery’)… While some respect is warranted, those allegations about the rape are incredibly dubious, and even some of the other scenes, like the gun merchant who hits on her, are quite troubling. The action here is also simply, un’throttled’ stuff, largely courtesy of Ferguson’s utter incapacity to shoot this. Index tells her, ”Mitchell, what are you doing??” Multiple sequences are framed from behind ‘Vivica’, and she is quite intriguingly blocking all action. Or it may indeed be a stand-in; her head is frequently severed by the framing too. I must repeat: unalterable, complete garbage.
Price was easy to like and I did like her a lot, there is a pleasant demeanor about her performance that seems to come from a different, better picture. There’s as well an embarrassing moment at a self-defense class where Heising does some actual acting for a change to semi-decent results. These aspects are however greatly outweighed by negatives like the long scene of the female protagonist munching on a pizza. Or the robo-arm, which is clearly just an empty plastic glove, while her robo-vision is a 99 cent Geordi LaForge custom from Party City. Or even the impression of the location being messed with, by the ‘Los Angeles police’ who stop and interrogate ‘Vivica’ and ‘Evangeline’ with Texas patches on their sleeves.
This could have been done with some changes, and a budget that was commensurate with the script. As is, we have to try and accept that placing some torn blue tarpaulins is transforming the room into a hospital. Even for government projects this surpasses the bare minimum and bi if you can achieve it: congratulations. Even a walk on part for scream queen Brinke Stevens (may be she should have been casted as the heroine?) at the end, is unable to elevate this to the level of watchable.
