After all, we could use a laugh in these times as it can be tough at times. That is how I felt when I attended the press screening of Reboot Camp, an indie comedy. David Lipper stars as Seymour, a head of a sham wellness retreat who films himself and his brother Danny, played by Keli Price, as they pretend to be contestants on a show. Seymour adopts a fake guru persona to showcase how easily voyagers fall into cult like structures. What will happen to these true knowers once the curtain is pulled?

Anyone who has seen a multitude of documentary series on this topic would know that this storyline is actually plausible. Cases in point would be Wild Wild Country, The Vow and LulaRich. This surely is an interesting world to examine and Reboot Camp seems to have found a new place to penetrate. The mockumentary is shot in a loose and unrestrained improvised style, as in The Foot Fist Way. Or even Arrested Development.

It is worth mentioning that the event was conducted outdoors. We settled into lawn chairs beneath the stars and tuned into the audio through headphones to block out street noise or the occasional helicopter. Many cast and crew members, including comedy heavyweight David Koechner, were in attendance.

Reboot Camp is one of this year’s most anticipated films with an eclectic ensemble cast consisting of Ed Begley Jr., Ja Rule, Nicole Aniston, Johnny Bananas, Billy Morrison, Chaz Bono, Eric Roberts, Shar Jackson and June Lee.

The film provided a smooth distribution of the cast and giggles throughout its entire runtime. There’s a plot that revolves around family, both at the fatherly level and at the societal level. The production design of Reboot Camp shocked me the most. It had a painting of our Guru in the gosh and a representation of a body part that got a lot of laughs. Even the text that appeared on the screen during an infomercial spoof was hysterical.

Reboot Camp has a few actors that are also producers, staying true to its indie roots, which is something I appreciate very much. To illustrate David Lipper as Producer, and Keli Price as Co-Producer. Reboot Camp is Ivo Raza’s second feature as Writer/Director, Everything came together very nicely.

But, like the world that it depicts, Reboot Camp has its rough edges. It should not have been so obvious that infidelity was a recurring theme because, in truth, it was monotonous. There were so many characters having, or had, everything that I lost track of them all. And, some of the jokes did not land at all. These points are trivial, but no doubt true. The film overall was an enduring and precise comedy.

As a last consideration, I would say that Reboot Camp is a cult comedy worth watching. If you enjoy this style of indie freeform comedy, you are in for a treat.
