Sarah (Jones) travels from Bournemouth to London where she reunites with her friend Deedee (Alexander). Sarah hopes to become a successful singer and works hard to make that happen. Things go as planned and she starts working at a record shop, starts dating a nice guy (O’Hara), and meets Russell (Andrian), a music executive who books her to sing at several venues. Unfortunately, Russell is a harsh person and he has a majorly negative effect on her life, which begins to deteriorate.
This one showcases the life of Sarah, a sociable and happy person, as she battles with her self-image and identity due to the adverse effects stemming from her surroundings. Setting the plot during the nineties highlights the adverse effects of the music industry and the way an individual life can devolve from apathetic pressure. It identifies the key points, isolation, addiction, self-mutilation, and negative repercussions for self-worth. Simultaneously demonstrating the importance of friendship and personal devotion with respect to self-goal and aspiration achievement. The vivid contrast between Sarah’s goals and the demeaning control held by a friend of sorts, Russell, brings forth an inner turmoil so powerful that it drives the entire plot in Sarah’s favor.
The cast delivers very strong performances and Jones is quite dramatic as the main character, an aspiring singer who hits rock bottom and has to fight her way back. Andrian plays the antagonist and his character represents the dark side of the industry, a businessman who heartlessly exploits Sarah to make profit. Alexander, Newell, and O’Hara play those who show love and care for Sarah and support her.
Atkins excels in directing, creates great establishing shots, and editor Nele Mertens does smoothly crafted montages. The soundtrack is elaborate, and there are many songs that Sarah sings throughout the feature, whether it is on stage or in the recording booth.
There’s a lot this film has to offer: a romance, a tale of inner struggles, self-discovery, a great friendship, deep passion, an insight and an explanation of how to navigate life in the music industry while showing its ugly side. The movie has its downbeat moments, however, it shows that overcoming adversity is possible with self-esteem and support.
