When anything terrible strikes someone or there has been a significant alteration in their existence, most religious people tend to remark, ‘I shall pray for you.’ Well, I can do better. I have some prey for you. Prey of the Chameleon to be precise. The 1992 action thriller is precisely what the medical practitioner (or priest) recommended. So just sit back, or if you want, get on your knees and marvel at Prey of the Chameleon.
Sex and a Murder – There can never be a stronger opening to a movie than commencing it with a couple making love, followed by a murder – A murder by wire hanger. Prey of the Chameleon really reels us in and then cuts to J.D. (James Wilder) coming back to his West Texas home town. We later learn of his history, how he left his high school sweetheart Carrie (Alexandra Paul) standing at the altar. Carrie, who is now a deputy sheriff is not happy to see him, until that James Wilder charm works on her.
Welcome to the Zuniga! Everything in Prey of the Chameleon was nearly perfect, with the only exception being that deceased lady we witnessed at the start. Not until later did we discover that the individual behind her death is none other than Patricia (Daphne Zuniga). Well, at least that is the name she uses throughout most of the movie. Patricia is a serial killer, but not the ordinary kind. She is an escaped patient of a psychiatric facility who not only assassinates, but also assumes the identities of her victims. Quite similar to a chameleon in regards to how they change colors. J.D. going on the rampage begins with him hitching a ride from a rehabbing Patricia. While the decision to pick her off is horrendous, it is worse to lose a bar brawl while the rehabbing Patricia and Jason are attempting to fight off a bar brawl. At least they have the sense to realize that bar fights are a basic requirement in the action genre. Ah yes, J.D. also does something incredibly rude by sleeping with Patricia, and after that, I really do feel for Carrie.
G-Men: The FBI was on the case after one of Patiricia’s victims was raped and murdered, and so was Agent Resnick (Don Harvey). Agent Resnik fills out the details of Patricia’s life, explaining her mother’s abuse, and how his 10 year old daughter killed her mother and went insane. Resnick briefs Carrie on Patricia’s murder spree and subsequent identity theft. That reminds me, Carrie had slso said that it is just like a Chameleon changing its colors. Great police work, Carrie. I came to the same conclusion one Bullet Point earlier.
A Chameleon Can’t Change Its Spots – Poor Patricia is being abused by her mom, and subsequently, while still trying to get back at her, she tries to turn her daughter Janet into JD. At first, she undergoes the subtle transformation by sipping beer while pretending to use her JD’s toy gun in his pick up truck. She did promise not to hurt any more people after ditching me. Unfortunately, Patricia is way too drastic when she attempts to rob a convenience store, and it’s not like she’s a saint either, the whole murdering thing is pretty bad as well.
