Plan B is a funny and delightful romance that brings a breath of fresh air to the age-old formula of romantic comedies. The movie, directed by Brandon Tamburri, stays true to form as we watch Piper Brennan, brought to life through the gifted Jamie Lee, as she deals with an unplanned pregnancy and twinkling fantasies about new love and a perfect husband who is ready to have children. When considering the film’s synopsis, one thinks of Knocked Up, but after a few minutes of viewing Plan B, it becomes clear that this film is quite different, providing an exclusive way of looking at things and balancing comedy with drama.
Jamie Lee is stellar in the pivotal role of Piper who is always in a tough spot, though it is hard not to root for her even when she makes some poor decisions. Lee’s performance seems to have been crafted specifically for this character, and you’ll definitely want to see more of her besides the high credits in writing. As the nerdy next-door neighbor Evan Ebert, Jon Heder’s over-the-top comedic performance never gets tiring and even feels charming at times. Although Heder occasionally revisits the absurd character from Napoleon Dynamite, he does a very good job helping the character transcend this impression and giving a pleasant surprise regarding what more he can bring to the role.
Completing the film is an ensemble cast including Shannon Elizabeth and Kate Flannery who contribute their own elements to the narrative. There are instances though when Kate Flannery’s comedic timing feels overemphasised. Virginia Elizabeth is also distracting but quite mildly in terms of her acting performance when on screen, and considering how much time she appears, it does not hinder the pleasure one gets from the film wholly. Well, we have definitely moved on from the days of American Pie.
Tamburri who already wowed all in Hereditary proves himself as a versatile Director, tactically intertwining the comedy and the sensitive elements within the film’s context. The film is quite fast-paced, allowing for an interesting plot from the beginning until the end and the dramatic twist towards the end of the film is actually very touching. Admittedly, the film does lose a plot mid-second act but it succeeds in tying all the ends up at the end of the film and leaving the audience in a gratified mood.
Though Plan B might not revolutionize the romcom category, it achieves everything it set out to do quite spectacularly. It’s so charming, angry, and full of emotions that fans from the category will not find it hard to watch. Even though I would have liked it, I have a feeling that this film will appeal to women like my mother, wife, or sister more. Still, it is a reasonable addition to the genre and I cannot wait to see what else Brandon Tamburri will come up with.
