I have not reviewed a film on my blog for quite some time now. I am subscribed to Great American Pure Flix where I can stream and watch films that are faith-based and family-friendly. Since the Great American Family merged with Pure Flix on June 15, 2023, and since Sony is also part of the company, I decided to subscribe on June 18, 2023. Prior to that, I used to subscribe to Pure Flix but I noticed that many of the films that were offered after David A. R. White and Andrea Logan White divorced were not as family-friendly or faith-based, therefore I decided to cancel my subscription.
Great American Family Pure Flix catches my attention because Candace Bure now has a say in what is offered after she left Hallmark due to them producing films that went against her values. So, I decided to look into what they have and I have to say I am impressed. I did subscribe and I am satisfied with all the movies that I have watched on that streaming service so far.
“Peaceful River” reveals the young life of Casey who comes from a long and proud line of cowboy family mixed with military servicemen. His best friend growing up was a Mexican girl named Maria. Before he dropped out of high school, he made the decision to join the military and asked Maria to patiently wait for him. Prior to enlisting, he rode in a pony rodeo but it was never his strong suit, then proceeded to make inexplicable decisions. Eventually, he enlisted in the army and began Special Forces training. His first deployment was in Afghanistan leading a team of four men after 911 in the US. By the time Casey returned home, he had seemingly lost everything of value to him.
This movie is rated highly in my books. I like the character development throughout the film. The movie relied heavily on the characters and I was invested in them achieving their nto spring fulfillment of their goals.
While I wished to see more of the cruelty evoked through warfare, the blend of my learnings on the wars that took place in Afghanistan and the portrayal was very authentic and realistic.
This film made me feel a lot of things. I smiled at a number of scenes. I even caught myself laughing a couple of times. I winced and shuddered at particular scenes, and let’s just say that I did cry a lot.
I have always maintained that novels and films that make one cry one moment, and then laugh the next are usually the ones I appreciate the most. They are certainly the ones that are most vivid in my memory and tend to stick with me the longest.
It’s not very often that a film or a novel warrants more than a tissue slip, but, George O’Connor’s Peaceful River had me willing to part with two tissues, which is quite the record for a single viewing.
I would recommend this film without any hesitation to anyone who loves cowboy films or films with lots of tears. Apart from all the emotion Peaceful River puts you through, it also provides some strong lessons, quite directly and gently, at the same time.
Parents should remember that this film is rated PG-13 for its more mature themes, but as clean as it is, it definitely does lose any chances of exploring graphic or gory elements, and the Christian life and beliefs do flow through the storyline.
