The television series “Paw Patrol” is viewed with a single track, with the prevalent intention to(1)follow and engage children towards the characters and (2)entice parents into buying dolls, T-shirts, books, hoodies, birthday party hats, toys, toothbrushes, watches, and party decorations among others. The show is brilliant in constructing just the right equilibrium of fright and comedy before a relieving laugh or an exciting save. Like the smurfs and Disney’s seven dwarfs, the puppies have straightforward one attribute characters like clumsy, hungry and many others. The easy to relate characters set the stage for a catchphrase children can look forward to. The narratives are deeply moving, with the young characters displaying bravery and cool mastery over the latest technology to save the day. There is a villain, who is more amusing than frightening and manages to teach nice lessons on confidence and teamwork. All of this is backed by incredible guest stars like Kristen Bell, James Marsden, and Kim Kardashian who voice the minor characters. Although when i did smile, it was mostly remembering the Oscar Isaac sketch about Paw Patrol on Saturday Night Live.
In “Paw Patrol”, Ryder a ten-year-old boy who is new to Finn Lee Epp, is in charge of a team of puppies like a justice league and together they can do anything. They can rescue by land, air or sea in Adventure City.
The Coast Guard, the Police Department, and the Fire Department. This is what these children pilots identify with. They can picture themselves playing the role of the ‘good’ and a ‘kind caregiver,’ who happens to be a child too. Ryder’s family is never revealed, and thus we are led to believe that he is self sufficient which gives a lot of importance to the pups’ safety and encourages them to master the technology the Pentagon would envy. But most importantly, he is always reminding them of the importance of teamwork.
Mckenna Grace is a powerful young actress and she now plays Skye who becomes central here as Chase did in the first film that was previously voiced by Iain Armitage who now is played by Christian Convery. However, like other pups, Skye is courageous, dedicated, and strong, but she has been dealing with a sense of lack going back to when she was a runt and the only one left unadopted in her litter. This is what made her decide to run away to follow Ryder, but she got stuck in the snow. Ryder rescued her and took her with him, but it still bothers her that she is not growing.
With a delicious evil laugh, Teri P Henson gives us this film’s villain, Victoria Vance, who is simply delightful.
Victoria keeps denying that she is a ‘mad scientist,’ but as we witness her orchestrating the use of magnetism to yank meteors out of orbit, that is clearly what she is. Those meteors carry in them a mysterious power source that will be the theme of the story. And, speaking of the former mayor and cat lover Humdinger, Humdinger(Ron Pardo) fans will be happy to see him appear again because he does so as Victoria’s jail cell roommate who helps her break out.
Operating their planes, boats, vehicles or the command center enables the Paw Patrol pups to see every part of Adventure City. Now they can do almost anything. It was always fun to see enormous city structures that magically build themselves back after the headquarters was destroyed. I mean, it’s so extensive. But maybe after more than 200 episodes and another feature film, they need more. So, why don’t we just give them all superpowers!? Oh wait, it gets better. Conveniently one of those scrapped designs for one of the mysterious meteors contains crystals, one for each pup. And these crystals amplify individual special abilities. Isn’t that cool? And this time rather than simply G rated it is a bit more intense so it earns a PG for some peril and “cartoon violence. No one gets hurt, but there’s a lot of destroyed property.
The following statement really captures the essence of it: ‘They’re cute little puppies who drive around in cars. I know that sounds weird, but just go with it’ The anthropomorphic puppies at the heart of the tale seem to entertain children. Then, is this week’s movie going to win an Oscar? No. Do parents like the movie? Only if they find numbers going into the voice of the star guest and handing popcorn to their ecstatic children. So, does this movie literally mean purchasing a means of a monopoly delivery system? Sure. But is this a fantastically non violent means of getting children accustomed to seeing the movies which they have adored reading, but on a much larger screen in a pitch dark room? Absolutely.
