Five years have gone by since the creation of David Lam’s ICAC franchise, in which he modestly attempted Z Storm’s box office number. With every new franchise, he returns as Officer William Luk, the poster boy for the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). However, it seems that over time the depth of Louis Koo’s character has been lacking; in fact, it feels like the character has been stuck at poster level for quite some time now. With each film, the light in Louis Koo’s eyes heavily diminishes. This time, based on several corrupt inmates which includes a wealthy heir Cao (Raymond Lam) and many other wardens commanded by Superintendent Sham (Patrick Tam). This adds a major risk to his mission, considering Wong (Gordon Lam), a retired detective which Luk forced into retirement back in Z Storm, now works there.
With each episode of this franchise, certain box office figures have excelled, one new installment earning more than the last one. A 17 million dollar profit is unheard of and by the fourth film reaching 115 million dollars is exhilarating. We will have to wait and see if 230 million dollars is reached with the now-announced 2021 G Storm. In terms of scening the groud work has been laid but still there is advancement required. But still, the immensely absurdly titled P Storm is a quarter of a notch better than L Storm making it the top of the list I’m still grateful. Predictably, the plotting is neither terribly imaginative nor fully without discretion, not to say too many bearing pedantic footprints of China Mainlnd are not present pacing on the action is a little off a few hurried sprints behind Thaub I mentioned. Half this novel is incredibly Penn in moderate conditions. Though I presume my expectations about the prison setting being as overwhelming and beautiful as Ringo Lam’s Prison on Fire are unmet. There is no doubt I am going to get disappointed.
The phrase ‘good and pleasant’ sums up the ever-expanding target group which, is worsened by sophisticated concepts that lack the simplest of precision. This is slightly puzzling with the continuity of the previous actors (Gordon Lam, Julian Cheung, Ding Haisfeng, Kevin Cheng) and some newer actors like Patrick Tam, Adam Pak, Dada Chan, and Sek Sau. Others seem to be in their third or fourth different character in the series, such as Lo Hoi Pang and Liu Kai Chi. Koo, a rather morose-looking character, was paired with a new actor, unhinged Raymond Lam, who came as an entertainer. It is good to see Gordon Lam, whose amazing scumminess enlivened Z Storm, but his role here is plainly a contorted plot device. The ever-present scum of Patrick Tam and Liu Kai Chi, however, is not lacking in variety. Julian Cheung, at most, makes an appearance, while Kevin Cheng, who takes over in the editing helicopter finale, iny board is obviously adopting Koo for the last 12 letters of the alphabet alongside his chubby precocious self.
