Back in 2016, the film trailer for Oloibiri was the first one to get me interested. The trailer was distinctive from the rest as it gnoshing packed with excitement, dynamic and it was evident that they did not have to strain to capture the best pieces of the movie. I was able to relish on it a few times on Africa Magic, even more, it was very amusing to watch. It did not come as a surprise to me that it was number three on my preference list. Just like the trailer had promised, Oloibiri lived up to the expectation and provided action alongside education.

A common knowledge is that oil has served as a bane and a boon to Nigeria. It has created as much wealth as it has inflicted poverty. Conversations on oil – what it means to us, why we depend on it and if we, as Nigerians can do without it- thrived in 2016. It was very interesting to read articles on the issue, it was all over the Newspapers. It is beautiful to witness this narration, in the medium that we love the most -film. Also, some of us have in 2016 tackled the issues that have really troubled the oil producing states. How is the life of the peoples? Set against the background of exploitation, ignorance, prejudice and hope, the theme of “Oloibiri” allows us to travel back in time and learn more about the village where Nigeria’s first oil discovery took place.

Boma a.k.a Gunpowder by Richard Mofe Damijo is an oil activist and a graduate Geologist who finds it hard to work with a specific oil company due to them shattering his peaceful creek along with the lives of everyone who could benefit from the resources it has. Elder Timipre, played by Olu Jacobs, is one such example of a villager who suffered from the pollution because it was too much for him to handle. He loses his wife and soon after that escapes the country for a scholarship. This is where he has a very specific plan in mind upon returning.

These characters show so many deeds done in these villages and how it affected them. The character of Chisom played by Ivie Okujaiye, is a young medical doctor, who comes into contact with Powell played by William R. Moses. Powell has to go through a kidnap attempt. All the characters that have different stories and experiences combined, make Oloibiri what it is.

“Oloibiri” succeeds because it is based amount with things that actually happened. It exposes the World of the people of “Oloibiri”. The pains that these people have suffered seems real enough to be convicted. Do we address the government (even when they can’t be), or the citizens? Oloibiri seems to strike at the civilians more than the government, maybe it is an attack on which side of the divide. The film made it clear how the government has continuously let us down. Well, what can we do for ourselves? This is the impression I came away with after watching the film. There was oil on their are being exploited, Boma, and Elder Timpre are the ones who are able to see and feel the pain of the people. Pain that helps gives power to the exploitation that is being fed on the nations people. And in one of the simple ideas, the character of Boma, it is through him that we are told of how aggression gets him the results he wants. But he is does not budge. You do not want to see his ‘peaceful’ creek. What use to be a peaceful creek. Making Boma a degree holder is a simple idea that drives a crucial point home.

Elder Timpre has endured the negative impact of the exploitation of his people first-hand as a leader.

Samantha Iwowo is head of the script, and Curtis Graham is head of the direction. The script is so masterfully crafted because a great effort was expended to ensure that this significant story gets told. That is the best part about Oloibiri – its brilliance. There is a wave of inspiring intelligence from the writer, the director, the crew, and the cast, so every aspect of this film is exceptional. It is teamwork that bears fruiting result. Oloibiri is fulfilling in numerous ways.

Oloibiri is a refreshing piece. It is good, and it deserves every praise and every bit of award. Equally important, Olobiri needs to earn its place in our history repository and not be a film that gets lost with time; it requires an appropriate level of exposure, even for those who claim to be disinterested
