The film’s focus was also the fact that trafficking is not only an issue with poor nations but even the rich ones. A human trafficking hotline based in Washington DC is answering calls from everywhere in the United States: Wisconsin, LA, Houston, New York. Debra, who described herself as a domestic slave, recounted in an interview, “I was doing everything; taking care of the kids, cleaning, and cooking all the day”.

In 2011, he directed, produced, and shot a film that spanned over a dozen countries across five continents alongside the entire coverage. It is a rough collection of stories from the victims of trafficking blended with opinions of people in human rights activism such as himself.

Once again, the film went to Africa to depict yet another horrifying tale. Here, we are introduced to Grace: a victim. She had just turned fourteen when she was seized from her school in Northern Uganda by the notorious Lord’s Resistance Army. Killing, hunger, and rape was a part of her daily life. While being escorted to what was presumed to be a ‘safe place’, she once uttered, “I could reach Sudan with my group, not safe, but not dead.” Once they arrived in Sudan, she and several other children were handed AK-47s. “I feel sharp pain inside me that children are still going through what I went through”, she said.

With this context in mind, I was shocked to learn about human trafficking such as forced begging, sexual terrorism, and child labor, but I certainly did not expect to see children’s testimonies of sperate incidents that involve killing family members, or 7 year old girls being made to sleep with men. The film captured and showcased horrific events that I myself did not believe were possible in this day and age.

The film also includes information on the trafficking that occurs in India, one of the leading countries with a large number of street children. Some of them are kidnapped within the country and sold to various people to work as child prostitutes and slaves.

I was in Africa where fishing was done by a ten-year-old without any medical attention given. This is where the ignorance in Africa is making it worse. One woman claimed that God will cover the children, so they can consume anything.

The last portion of the film suggests, however, that there is a glimmer of hope. The schools are being opened in places such as Egypt to teach human rights and to eradicate the illiteracy which rather unfortunately facilitates the trafficking. It is those people who were once victims and managed to survive to recount their horrific tales who serve as a source of hope. People such as Brizillian journalist Leo Sakamto, who is actively engaged in doing something about the problem. His rationale is straightforward: “I cannot relish a proper life while others exist as animals not because I am good at heart, but simply because he is a person like me.”

Trafficking is also a problem in Nepal. If a girl is born into poverty, she will sooner or later begin paying the traffickers the dues. Rather than sex trade, the children will be making rugs which will then be sold to rich consumers in the west.

The documentary movie does not feature the professional sound design of a typical Hollywood movie, which adds to the character’s raw and real emotions. The tears that participants shed throughout the documentary illustrate the depth of their suffering and pain. The moment they begin sharing their accounts, faces become ghostly pale. Their voices quaver and turn deep, as the tears stream down. If they indeed recollect the traumatic events from a long time ago, I wonder how intense their emotions must be when they reflect on these moments.

Moreover, central Europe is also susceptible to human trafficking. A Trian from Zoha prison claimed, ‘I do not regret it we had contracts with mothers, daughters, and their families.’ ‘I would say, instead of living in poverty, come with me to another country, and you will have much more.’ Another trafficker remarked, ‘I would beat them and not offer them food. ‘Regardless of their efforts, they will never return to being proper women.’
