A large number of people still think of miracles in terms of crying sculptures inside churches or remarkable cures at different famous locations around the globe. However, astonishing things happen world around us on daily basis. Walt Whitman et cetera and other poets have recognized it but the fact remains that there is still a cynicism lurking in the culture that denies anything beyond logic. Spiritual writer Dan Wakefield has similarly said, “We may prepare ourselves for the possibility of miracles in our lives. It is possible to build an environment that makes the occurrence of miracles – at least in terms of transformation and healing – much more probable.”

We encourage you to prepare yourself for the miracles that come during Noel, a film about New York City during Christmas, a period when a lot of people feel alone and cut off from community feeling joyous parts of the holiday. This is the first feature film directed by Chazz Plamonte, the movie and theatre actor. David Hubbard, the screenwriter, is not afraid to incorporate coincidences that defy logic, but have no trouble at all captivating the heart.

Rose (Susan Sarandon) is a middle-aged book editor planning to spend Christmas Eve in the hospital with her mother suffering from Alzheimer’s. Rose’s colleague claims that self-care is what she truly needs. When Marco (Daniel Sunjata), an attractive young coworker, invites her to dinner, she agrees. But Rose lacks the courage to reciprocate his affection and he leaves. Later in the evening, she encounters Nina (Penelope Cruz), a pretty young woman who recently had an argument with her jealous fiancé Mike (Paul Walker). The two women, who are reluctant to celebrate the holidays, disclose their emotions. Rose meets Charlie (Robin Williams) who she speaks to in an adjacent room to her mother’s as she describes how thankful he is to hear her caring words. Watching how much joy tears brought her, she was ready to emotionally engage to a physician who desired to romance her.

Mike Keller, a police officer, meets Artie (Alan Arkin) in a restaurant, and this stranger ends up stalking him home. It happens that Artie is certain that Mike, his wife who died in a terrible accident, is actually living as a reincarnation. As the policeman comes across more details of this sad man’s life, it is puzzlingly unveils the wrecking forces that jealousy can give rise to. On Christmas of all days, Mike is able to do good by uttering words that very much need to be heard, in Artie’s case, fuelling hope that has gone untapped for many years.

The last lonesome character in this sad story is Jules (Marcus Thomas), a street con who manages to get his hand broken, so he’s able to visit the hospital emergency room. The most joyous moment of his life was when he was 14 years old receiving an in house party during Christmas in a hospital. But it is impossible to ever go back. His mother comes into focus due to a compassionate psychologist with a new interpretation.

For promotional purposes, the production company offered the statement “miracles lie closer than you might think.” Try not to operate under the assumption of those pessimistic critiques that tell you to run away from this film since it is overly sentimental. Try to appreciate the possibility for miracles as the four main characters who in the beginning are very self-isolated and open themselves to be able to truly taste rest, joy and love, the greatest gifts of Christmas.
