Night Explorers: The Asylum” follows the storyline of streaming channel extrepreneurs who expect to receive ‘real evidence’ in the paranormal world but do not make use of their skepticism about the claim, which makes for an intriguing plot line. The twin attractions of combining all four major elements of the digital world along with, “it is one of the most haunted places on Earth” guarantees attention even without the props that are said to exist. “Nigh Explorers” had every right to assume that this asylum, which was shut down due to allegations “satanic rituals” carried out by the staff, would provide a greater deal of ‘supernatural’ activity. Instead, everything in the show appears to accessible deep within its core. The claim made regarding the asylum along with ‘the fake’ props seem to be the thinnest strings that maintain the soar. These gimmicks are more than enough to guarantee a high value of viewship. They just do not work in the realm of beyond ‘scripted reality’ themed television. Ah, they are in for a higher level of destruction rather than a deeper form of reality. This British production provides us with a teaser of shorthand terror with a hint of eight cameras and “spirit box,” along with drones “woo woooooos” to Pelosi Asylum. I am inclined to think that is what it is called. But they are British. Porcestershire wouldn’t surprise me.

The cast includes Craig Edwards, Hanna Al Rashid, Monte Solomons, Algina Lipskis, Neal Ward, April Luong, Dave Dyer, and Charlie Rich who all resorted to impersonating the delicate characters that were introduced as “sketched in type,” therefore having no impact in the introductions or party prior to the latest taping. Paid exploration tickets for an abandoned mental hospital were available so they showed up for the privilege to “investigate.”

Deciding to gather ‘evidence’ on tape, they opt for smaller groups, putting one unlucky fellow at the “only entrance” as they prepare to investigate. Just as they get aimed on for the ghosts, shadows begin launching out of the dark to stab, bash in skulls and… start lunching out. One by one, each unlucky fellow is set on a pentagram while the urge to brutally murder them arises- maybe even parking the punctured dominant.

Yes, they are “locked in here like some s–t horror movie” because, to speak the honest truth, they are locked up in “some s–t horror movie.”

Its remarkable nasty behavior as captured in John K. Webster’s documentary (which consists of a mixture of entertaining elements like swish-pan, cut-glass, and frantic motion camera images) comes across as artful on the surface. This is evident when the camera shifts to focus on the attackers, be it supernatural or otherwise. The camera is running head first through corridors. First moving from room to drawing room, staircase to searching “investigator(s).”

Violence can be suspenseful and jolting. We begin to wonder who attempts to fight back, when, and who out of this attention craving performing for the camera millenials will be effective in fighting back.

But at the end of the day, “Night Explorers” some windows show their all-nighter-in-the-asylum is in daylight fails in the execution of its parachute plot. It does not give itself time to allow for character-viewer connection, fails to establish any semblance of originality, and like a cliched film, does not need to be experienced again.
