Edward Burns has always infused personal experiences into the films and television projects he has produced as a writer-director. However, mirroring the creative aspects of his first big film “The Brothers McMullen” has required him to spend time on smaller movies with younger casts and crews, which inescapably pushed that kind of work further away from him, now. In an industry where there are no intelligent adult drama movies, it is nice to see someone like Burns back in the limelight through “Millers in Marriage”, as he has been able to explore topics that he understands after the age of 50.

“All I’m looking for is a stable relationship with a woman, preferably my age,” heard his new girlfriend Renee (played by Minnie Driver) putting her mind at ease because she is worried about his wanting to start a family. This couple is at a summer house acquired in Renee’s divorce, and from what can be seen through the scenes of “Millers in Marriage”, at this moment of the movie, the man could not have done any act more romantic than that.

While their recent 15-year marriage didn’t get terminated by Andy, he’d surely appreciate it now in any case since leaving the volatile Tina (Morena Baccarin) involved less upheaval for him. And if he’d like to remember, he need only make a call to his younger sister Eve (Gretchen Mol) who is married to Scott (Patrick Wilson) who sometimes is away as a music manager and several days can pass without a call to his wife from the road.

Nichole Miller is married to Nick Campbell, who happens to be her other sister Maggie’s husband. Maggie, on her part, has not been upset with Nick but has been a bit upset with him because her son climbed many steps up to college and broke their family apart. However, she is a writer and so does not feel a need to be upset as she can always twist her emotions in her fictitious work as a novelist. Whatever the case, the Millers all had an interest in something artistic, and Edwin37/Scott’s storyline now begins with the expectation of depicting how the artists clearly took the plunge. She previously fronted a band until she and Scott fell pregnant. It’s also a side story; He can make ironic commentary on crowds and wearisome ups & downs of hair & career which is close to his heart. Besides, the self-irony as creamer, “that’s how grubby ‘upper’ class’s avocation used to sound. It is Lady Rebec, Nick Mosthofer’s wife, who is reading a part of her recently written novel and exclaims: ‘Nothing in life, but merely coughed the’.‘Taxpayer’ understand it that way, Sullivan’ less cowering on accounts, the Big Sis and the Little Bro have to munch’.

However, it is here that Burns goes further, offering reflections of sincere self-critique and grappling with the excessive price that individuals have to pay in order to manage their personal goals with those stemming from a more professional sphere as well as make room for a long-standing relationship. The picture offers a glimpse into Eden’s past life, and her husband’s existence, through a junior rock journalist called Johnny (Benjamin Bratt) who constantly pressures Eve to tell him about her book and her reasons for wanting to leave New York because it is a city of the young. But as Eve is quick to say, perhaps it is the other way round and he is trying to get the kind of exposure he does not desire.

The pleasant thing about ‘Millers in Marriage’ is that it manages to be so relaxed while all the characters seem to be so tense among each other. It’s refreshing to see an ensemble so at ease with their figurative parts so that the weight carried by the lives the characters formed and are afraid to change comes through, and Burns, together with editor Janet Gaynor, builds the film’s tight and uncluttered pacing, surgically slow with flashes brought into the cadence of discussions that reveal what transpired as opposed to what someone would prefer to tell or remember regarding the occurrence. It is this withholding that serves as the basis for conflict when the three principal pairs reach a turning point, but in a case when honesty is the scab made in trade, it is the romance the characters can have ‘in broad daylight’ with each other that demonstrates how the characters interact quite seductively, especially when the author does not lose his ear for spoken dialogue in which people resonate.

As the film approaches its conclusion, it becomes more melodramatic as decisions begin to be made. Such miseries, however, are worth viewing. The players have been established as movie stars, and while the issues may seem mundane, they are shown in a more fascinating light. These problems may be as ancient as time, but there is comfort in seeing how some things in life truly improve with age.
