The movie isn’t great, but it’s okay. There’s the terrifying boogeyman who looks like a Batman villain and has a voice that resembles a combination of the candyman and Freddy Kruger. He wears different gnarly masks and torments teenagers by turning their fears into a reality such as slashing their throats with a giant bunny headed goon, or tearing their heads off with a clawed fist, and even making them cough up blood and explode. The boogeyman stars in every game that these teenagers play, and it’s his job to tortue them. The advanced form of horror stems from an urban legend from the 1980s, and it leads to a very ugly story filled with violence.
What is most amusing about the movie is that the Midnight Man can only do very petty things. This is in stark contrast to the simple blood rituals one needs to do to summon Bloody Mary or vampires. In particular, he only comes out when children participate in games that involve dozens of unwarranted signatures, pictures taken with a child’s deepest fears etched on the back, knocks on the door, and a strict no-use of personal candles for longer than 10 seconds. These kids also need to endure staying from midnight to 3.33 am inside a deserted house filled with clocks. Not only all this rigmarole hard to keep straight as the helpfully overexplanatory doctor (Robert England) says, the Midnight Man likes to cheat so none of it matters anyway.
This segment actually warms you up for the story, apart from the prologue set in 1953. This part intensely focuses on dutiful yet sad Alex looking after her grandmother Anna who appears to be suffering from dementia while trying to juggle certain other issues in a mansion occupied with creepy objects such as ghost sheeted mannequins. Miles, who is Alex’s boyfriend, and Alex are told to go to the attic and look for a silver mirror. Trusting even more their instincts, they peruse the abstract location only to stumble upon even odder discoveries such as a box tied up with a string. Trying to uncover its contents becomes an obvious goal, and it is here where they find themselves in trouble since they did not have a TV or any means of entertainment besides needless to say, movies. At this point, the distance gantries towards the maximum distance before Miles uncovers the horrible rules of the formula. Things add onto the worst possible situation when Kelly enters the frame. Although she is a boring variety of a goth, she also decides to join in the game only to be burdened with extreme guilt from killing the self-murdering rabbit.
The shocking factor remains Lin Shaye as a mad old bat and Englund’s gouged eyes. They save the redeeming factor as Lin Shaye is an enjoyable sweet, furious and spiteful. She is responsible for throwing players to the MM. She really revs her elbow into slaughtering the ex-Freddy, although I do not expect this is likely to lead to follow ups. He is a worthwhile guest predominantly because of the value, but I can’t seem to wrap my head around how the words were able to spill out before he was squashed. ‘Z’ is the writer and director Zariwny, who is mostly known for the foolish flipping of Cabin Fever, but he has produced some genre originals too such as Scavengers and Intruder. But, this too is a remake of the 2013 Irish film Midnight Man which is not half as interesting as the Burt Lancaster crime film from 1974. All things considered, this movie is plain and forgettable, and it will definitely struggle to stay alive in the spooky somethingman competition owing to Candyman, Slenderman and the bye bye man.
