In this time, I will start this article with a confession. The confession is that to me, the idea of being scared has ever been appealing. The nerves the anxiety. It is for such reasons that I can understand why there are some people eager to feel the thrill of such an event but none for me. This, to me, is the reason behind my complete aversion to haunted houses trespasses of a hush. It is because I believe those situations are meant to scare the audience. With this realisation, I effectively put labels on myself as a not being a horror movie enthusiast for several years. My reasoning always was like if I hate to be scared, then clearly, there is no way I would enjoy horror.

What many people cannot explain or understand, is my choice of only certain types of horror. At least not the American tradition of the so called haunted house type of horror. I do not believe I ever would come across the torture or possession genres in film, but let’s admit it most of them are close to this sphere, when people go through hard times and and strive to surpass the intensity of these experiences. The heroes and heroines of the movies’ protagonists become the lost who fans must support throughout the movie. In most major films the has protagonist endured the moment of relish and satisfaction for history’s defeat comes in the end. There’s something satisfying about it.

I suppose I will continue to be fussy about the kinds of horror films I view and comment upon but I have to say, it has been interesting to so many other genres and perspectives of myself as well as my film preferences.

I trust that you reading do also step out of your comfort zones from time to time and enjoy the excitement that life has to offer.

Well, what a long build up to the reviews of two quite recent horror movies. I had a very disappointing summer, so I am quite glad to report that I enjoyed both of these horror films. So here’s how it goes.

To begin with, we have a lower budget thriller which did not have a lot of marketing push What You Wish For. There’s a good chance the wording here will be compared to The Menu (I liked that one too) but at least this one gets the ending right. Still, for those who loved The Menu, a food horror film will definitely thrill them.

This is primarily demonstrated by Nicholas Stahl playing Ryan, a chef who is engaged by some secretive organization that organizes private food functions for the ultra rich. We learn that Ryan is in deep debt due to gambling and thus follows the instructions of the company, but as Ryan starts cooking situations take a different turn.

There will undoubtedly be some who cannot go where What You Wish For expects them to go but for me, the setting was adequately isolated, the emotion of the characters was convincingly vile and the rhythm and suspense handled by director Nicholas Tomnay was so skillfully built that I was completely sold from the very first frame. Sr. Stahl is also performing very well since our protagonist gets more and more frantic but rather slippery in terms of how whiny and contemptuous he is allowed to be. It’s a mesmerizing performance that holds everything together and I look forward to seeing more from this film.

The supporting cast is brilliant as well, and there are effective twists and turns in the scripting which I will not give away. What You Wish For is certainly a gem that is among the underrated films of the year and I would recommend it quite highly. its time to take a dip into the portrayal of our interesting auteur filmmakers that are intriguing. Even if it’s Robert Eggers or even Jordan Peele or others where is a lot of interesting artists you are missing out on if you cut yourself off from this specific mode of storytelling. One such voice is Ti West who most recently capped off the last part of his bold trilogy of movies capped off by Maxxxine. Previously he had X and Pearl and in particular, Pearl was close to masterpiece level in the filmmaking process possessing an astonishing balance in all 3 of the movies created by Mia Goth.

Now we have Maxxine and overall, she is the most typical slasher of the group with her own gruesome kills and mystery Night Stalker element which moves the narrative. What it lacks in originality though makes up in style and characters. Goth is great once again portraying Maxine who is in a trashy adult film prayerfully playing the main role in a horror film called The Puritan II. Elizabeth Debicki chews the furniture playing a cynical but very effective film director, while Kevin Bacon is a very entertaining very shady detective character.

This pursuit of fame is what comes center stage in maxine and while simultaneously being a critique of such aspiration, it also recognizes how Hollywood exploits her for their avaricious ends. In many ways, it is like the opposite of La La Land or at least the more sinister version of that type of dream making. The movie as well is very beautiful and captures the year 1985 quite impeccably.

Maxxxine surely has its moments and can even be good, but its screenplay leaves a lot to be desired and is often dull in its 2nd act. Although the ending was less thrilling than I would have liked, the twist is disappointing, and the character driven story is great overall with amazing performances and visuals. If you don’t mind some blood I advise you to watch this entire Pearl trilogy and conclude it with Maxxxine.
