Dr. Paul Day was born and raised in Brisbane where his fascination with filmmaking began very early on. When he was just 12 years of age, he tried to make his own movie screens using the model spaceships he built himself. By the time he turned 14, he had the opportunity to act and assist with a few independent feature films and from there he started grasping how the film industry operated. Though at this time, the primary focus for him was music. Paul went on to work as a professional musician soon after school, playing in night clubs located on the Brisbane and Gold Coast. He has been a significant figure within the local music scene ever since.
He opened his own audio and video production studio, Angel Studios, in 2000. This enabled him to write, create, and direct independent feature films. His first film in this genre, a tongue-in-cheek Sci-Fi movie called Redemption 101, was released in 2007 and has slowly become sought after as a cult classic. In 2012, his second film, Beyond Redemption (The Visitor) was released. This was a stand-alone prequel to Redemption and 2012 Gold Coast Film Festival in Queensland, Australia opened with it. It went on to win the Best Foreigh Film award at the ASEAN International Film Festival in 2013. Paul has maintained the sci-fi/horror/comedy style and theme in the third installment of the trilogy, Beyond Redemption: Space Captain. He won Best Director at the Australian Screen Industry Network (ASIN) awards 2013 for Space Captain, which opened in August 2014 at Hoyts Cinema, Sunnybank, Queensland, Australia, and was later shown at Roswell Filmfest & Cosmicon on July 4, 2015.
In an astonishing deviation from his previous films, Magdala Rose stands out as a medieval adventure based on historical events. Paul has undergone a massive character evolution and now manages to infuse positive comedic moments in the films that were previously serious in nature. For instance, he humorously tackles tragic and serious events in Magdala Rose, which has now been nominated for numerous awards ever since it’s completion in November 2019. In 2020, it won the Historical Education Award at the Nice International Film Festival and grabbed five awards at ASIN for Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Producer.
Currently, Paul’s goal is focused on creating engaging characters and entertaining plots for his films. Paul’s crew members and his cast have stated that Paul has a relaxed approach towards direction which positively impacts the progress of the film. His passion for the industry compels him to assist in the growth of the local creative sector by providing opportunities for newcomers and talented actors as well as filmmakers. For his achievement, he was awarded aAoutstanding Career Achievement” award in 2016 by the Australian Screen Industry Network.
