This film reminds me of the wonderful westerns in the past, and is dedicated with immense love to the director’s father. In the remembrance of his father, Rev. D.H. Mapson who was a minister for 50 years and unfortunately passed away in 2019, Darrell Mapson has dedicated the film. He always insisted that with God’s support, everything is achievable, and the fact this film was completed serves as a confirmation.
The film starts with a highly elevated tension as Jack, who is rather aggressive, claiming robbers, attempts to use a train. Alfonso is joined by Quinn, Red, and Lucas, who assist him in the task. There is a further tension when Alfonso demands to be paid instantly; his menace increases when he is told to hold on and he eventually agrees. The following morning, he, along with money, disappears. However, is everything the way it is perceived? The moment his body is uncovered does the mystery begin unravelling. He is found but not without a high degree of treachery, which is what I’d call the position of his body.
As the movie unfolds, we are introduced to a widow named Kate played by Lisa Rentuor, and her daughters, Sarah and Sadie, portrayed by Heather Marie Peterson and Shannon Sinclear respectively. Kate is one of the most devout church goers, which is why all three ladies do a brilliant job at acting in the film. Kate has an excess of land which runs alongside the river, where she has hired some Chinese workers to mine for gold. Unfortunately, Jacks gang comes along and robs the Chinese workers, forcing them to leave the site. The miners are replaced with Ennis and Sal, who act as the gang’s puppets. These two become the source of laughter in the film.
The pace of the movie picks up when Lucas feels regret for his past life after meeting Sarah and going to her church. It is one of the good things that the movie illustrates that it is no convincingly Laura changes. A part of the sermon by the pastor is about the job and the trials that he went through and how God brought him through. In a later funny scene Lucas says the sermon was brief but to the point. Sarah explains to Lucas the reason the pastor’s sermon was short was due to the church picnic the food was ready. Mom Kate does pray as does my retired sheriff Jim Tucker who happens to come along to pray and have dinner with the family.
A bounty hunter named Tate collaborates with the present sheriff to chase after the gang. Nevertheless, while mom is gone, two of the roughnecks break into her house and discover Sadie. They realize that Kate has the land close to the river, and so they are going to stalk her until she returns home so that she can be forced to hand over the deed. They make her participate in a poker game that they know she does not want to play, so they win the de ed against her. As a comic relief, Ennis admits to Sal that he has a golden tooth, and Sal tells him to shut up! He does not want those crooks getting the idea of having that gold taken out of his friend’s mouth. The application of music, particularly at the final credits, is very good in the film. It includes an outlaw who lost it all. The song talks about God and his love as well as the theme of not riding solo.
In a further comical extension, Ennis informs Lucas that “Sal says sometimes I need to get to the point, and I just don’t.” “I understand what he means towards the issue,” responds Lucas. But there are also scenes of danger, such as when the crooks take Kate to the church to complete their evil plans. In the meantime, Lucas and Sarah ‘s behavior and facial expression says it all as they clearly have feelings towards each other and Lucas has been touched by what he knows about God and the Bible. Is he really going to be able to change and perhaps be in a position to assist Kate and her daughters, to keep them safe from the rest of the criminals?
