The phrase ‘if there is a gun in the first act, it has to go off by the third’ is advice that first sketchy writers need to focus on the essential aspects of their writing and delete the extra bits. Many people believe the phrase is attributed to writer Anton Chekhov. A true artist, however, perfects the rules only to master them. A mineral example of this is the MacGuffin — He name given by director Alfred Hitchcock to items that have no significance in a story aside from moving the plot along. In their newest release, La Gunguna, clever Dominican filmmakers pay tribute to both of these concepts by making the MacGuffin the point of focus. Yes, we are talking about the gun. Yes, it does get fired in the first act!
This tiny plot point follows to border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It follows the story of a lawyer-era with a side gig of selling guns that she sells to a corrupted Army Seargent. In does wonder for the puny .22 caliber.
Defensively, she uses la Gunguna more as an amulet. As long as its single rule is never broken, it will always shield its owner from any harm. It is said that many were the victims of Gunguna and that its origins are connected to villains like Dictator Rafael Trujillo. On a more positive note, Gunguna refers to the local snake-charming version of the biblical Saint Martha, Lazarus’ and Mary Magdalene’s sister. Does anyone here know her origin? It also resembles a non-English speaker saying “a gun’s gun” or gungunana from Hindi meaning to sing.
It is indeed very interesting, but what’s the importance? In the previous section, I explained the term MacGuffin and everything that it covers. And of course no importance, other than the fact that the connection of different stories gives the gunguna a significant meaning.
Puerto Rican pimp ‘el Bori’ (Jaime Tirelli) and his daughter Yosivette (Janina Irizarry) view it as a sadistic collectors item. The pool playing con gang consisting of Pancho (Vlad Sosa), Stuttering Martin (Isaac ‘Panky’ Saviñón), Bárbara ‘la Maeña’ (Nashla Bogaert) and the Mummy (Jean Gabriel Guerra) try to sell it to ‘el Bori’ for a great profit. Don Chu (Tung Chi Hsu), a local Chinese mafia boss, as well as his son Chuito (Rich Wong) want it back, because no one steals from the Chinese mafia! Barfly Puchy (Jalsen Santana) doesn’t even know it exists and just wants more drinks, a ride to the hospital and for music to be good again, brother!
