As Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, based on Megan McDonald’s book series, hits the screen, it surprises me how some people have rated it. There is a particular audience group for this film… and that is kids! The movie is not that fun to watch during a family movie night and it’s easy to understand why parents wouldn’t enjoy it.
While kids up to 4th grade level might find it more entertaining, if your child has read the Judy Moody series, there are chances that your kids will like the movie. Parents most likely would not be able to relate with the scenes which, in my perspective, is completely acceptable. All in all, I can see this movie working with children but not with the adults.
The movie follows Judy Moody, who is shocked to find out that all her friends are going to be occupied with a bunch of fun summer activities. Her parents go away on a super important trip, leaving Judy absolutely devastated. To put the cherry on top, Judy’s Aunt Opal comes in to babysit I know, rough and reminds me of my mom’s best friend Opal Hollingsworth. Which, think about it… how can you not remember that name after hearing it over and over again?
So how does this relate to “Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer”? I have to confess, when I watched the movie and now as I am writing this review, I seem to lose track of thought at the mention of “Aunt Opal.” There was not much in the film to help rein it back into place. I do apologize if it seems like this is a subject I change rather hastily, but I am trying to hint to my adult readers that while watching this film, you might find yourself searching for something to ponder over.
At any rate, Aunt Opal does turn up and she is not as dreadful as Judy Moody thinks. She creates a Thrill Chart, which is rather a disjointed checklist of things that are supposed to keep Stink and Judy busy during the summer, and the film sadly goes over some of these topics with a lot of color and cheerful music. There are some comments on those fundamental functions that many young children seem to find funny.
Jordana Beatty is perfectly suitable here, charming, and lively, and what I hope for her is that life offers her screenplays that I will find more engaging. She can certainly do well in “The Life of Opal Hollingsworth” which was based on an interesting character.
