Hey folks, Valkor here. “Weird Science” is one of my favorite films growing up, a sex comedy out of the 1980s. It blended humor, romance, charm, science fiction, and plenty more into an unforgettable film and experience. And as far as I can tell, such an event has never been duplicated. Perhaps I’m wrong or too lazy to search it up, but either way, we have something that seems to carry along those lines but has a modern-day twist to it. Take a look at iGirlfriend. And even if it does so much in trying to get to the level of Weird Science, it doesn’t get there. Even so, the film does enough to make it a fun film all its own. Let me begin with some spoilers ahead.
iGirlfriend focuses on two nerdy pals Simon (Dalton Edward Phillips) and Peg (Tony Vespe), who are experiencing the worst time of their lives. Simon is removed from his software club, and both of them have been “pantsed on YouTube,” and neither has a girlfriend. To fix the ‘no girlfriend’ issue at least, Peg motivates Simon to hack a program that would pretend they had girlfriends who would text and post on Facebook! Simon unwillingly goes along with it, but not without suffering consequences as he had mixed up their personalities thus Simon gets the naughty one, while Peg who is the perv gets the nice one. For Peg who has a liking towards one of the women he desired, this worked. But it didn’t aid Simon when the girl he adores saw “your man meat is SO BIG” (amongst other vile phrases) in some of the texts. Well, instead of deciding to end it all right there and then, Simon returns to the drawing board, wanting the option to be spared, and adjusts the program to his liking. After falling asleep with his laptop near him and pouring his energy drink on it, Lily (Kelly Pribilski) is miraculously brought to life.
So with that, Simon and Lily go off together to enjoy their life doing everything that makes them happy.
Let me guess. You thought Peg’s problem was only about him getting a virtual girlfriend or something. Well, Simon’s friend Peg needs his virtual girlfriend to get a real girl named Desiree (Gabriella Schafer). For that, he needs Simon’s laptop, and to Simon’s dismay, he has his plans all set up too. First, Peg gets the laptop, then breaks things off with her in an absolutely glorious fashion (set to the muzak version of “The Way We Were” Peg’s goals am I right). And then, Stephen makes some radical changes to Lily that will prove deadly to Simon. And now Lily is beyond affection and all Simon needs to do to revert her back to normal is get his laptop back from his worst enemy, Bash (Elvis Clark). What did I just read? You’ve got to be kidding me.
iGirlfriend draws heavily from “Weird Science” and even replicates a scene or two most notably the Kelly LeBrock doorway scene pose and all (pic below is related). The film tosses out a bunch of 80s easter eggs like Peg’s shirt being Michael J. Fox’s “Teen Wolf,” Space Invaders as wall decorations, the Simon and Lily fight which wholeheartedly screams “Fatal Attraction,” and then there is the end beat that calls back to “The Breakfast Club” with Simple Minds “Don’t You Forget About Me.” And was that the “Oh Yeah” riff from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Lastly, Tony Vespe’s “Peg” is simply an older version of young James Spader and I am ok with that. I mean, my girlfriend has so much 80s goodness, it’s insane. So, if I missed something, which I am sure I did, then please use my contact form. I would suffer through this again to see it all. writes Tony Vespe.
I would say that, unlike its predecessor, iGirlfriend lacks the charm and humor of Weird Science, but does so much by itself that it offers a captivating spectacle, not lacking in some subtle and not quite-so-subtle 80s references.
The film starts a little slow and the jokes are not as funny as I hoped, but for the sake of pacing, the “making of the girlfriends” part is done well. After that, things became really entertaining, although it was not entirely the sex comedy I hoped for. It wouldn’t hurt to show a breast or two because that’s what 80s comedy does. The performances were surprisingly decent with Elvis Clark standing out. He was the 80s badass this film needed, and he did paraphrase. He even had an 80s bully named “Bash” which is too good. Now, I must commend Kelly Pribilski. Likewise, apart from the 80s goodies, she made the film fun to revisit. Within 90 minutes, she captured all my beloved 80s female characters from the sweet and naive “girl next door type” to the psycho bitch. Go ‘head girl with fine ass! Ahem! Anyway, iGirlfriend is not one of the most hilarious comedies I’ve had the chance to review but I am sure people will enjoy this fun film.
It doesn’t start off well, and the end isn’t any better. I feel there are a lot of gaps in this plot, such as the first few minutes where Simon and Peg are introduced. I would have liked to know how much of a loser they really are and I don’t think Bash bullied them enough. Speaking of which, does anyone else find it annoying that, when Peg was the one who tried to hit on his girl, Bash still seems to hate Simon more than Peg? All in all, the movie isn’t everything that I said it was in the last paragraph. I hope at least some of you were astonished and inspired Don’t get too super excited. Just go with the flow and the movie might just entertain you.
iGirlfriend can now be found on DVD and online on Google Play and Amazon Instant. Out of all the iGirlfriend reviews, what I liked the most was that even though it does not make you laugh out loud, it is still very entertaining. Also, this movie was very refreshing compared to other recent films and I liked how it captures everything from an 80s film. In conclusion, I would rate iGirlfriend a TOV of 5 stars.
