Not too long ago, I flew out to teach at Longpoint and came across a movie by the title of I Can I Will I Did. It intrigued me enough to get me to jot down this quick review as it made me deeply resonate with its concepts and hope to share it with my fellow martial artists.

I want to be careful not to give too much away. This is not a ‘normal’ or ‘traditional’ martial arts movie in which the good guy defeats a hero. The main character, alongside a handful of other characters, uses martial arts as a self-improvement medium while facing life’s challenges.

The film is both extremely heartwarming and motivational. It does not drag on for too long, telling a compelling story in under two hours.

For someone who has never felt the glory of inner calm, joy, and the purpose that martial arts can bring to one’s life, the film hints that practicing martial arts would be a worthwhile endeavor. I do agree, and I also believe that martial arts contributes profoundly towards helping us become healthier and happier people. Indeed, I have even written an article on what I consider to be the value of HEMA to modern life, and I also curate a page on my website where I try to explain my philosophy for training and teaching, which translates into my own daily life.

For those who have benevolently had the great fortune to undergo the great challenge, the sweat, the effort, and the frustrations that come with practicing martial arts alongside the calm, joy, and purpose that one eventually feels, then you will recognize much of your own experience in this story.

I was smiling the whole film thinking about my years in karate I recall the hours spent doing the most basic actions. For someone with fears, worries, and an abundance of hopes, even standing up was a challenge. All my recollections stem from the efforts that were made to improve myself.

While watching the movie, I also remembered the time spent training and teaching HEMA. But putting in hours is nothing compared to what I am willing to pour into the craft, furthering my self-development while also giving back to society. It is one of the many joys I feel on a daily basis when I witness my students thriving, and I cannot express how glad I am to take part in this change.

Conclusion everyone should consider watching the film, regardless of whether you practice martial arts or not. Also, if you know friends whose children are at a crossroads about enrolling them in any form of martial arts, let them watch the film as well. Martial arts is so much more than an act of violence.
