From the 1950s, Hot Rod Girl chronicles the over the top adventures of an automobile crazed couple Lisa (Nelson) and Jeff (Smith), along with the help of police detective Ben Merrill (the chiselled stereotypes of Connors) as they attempt to get the local hot rod racers off the streets and send them to the strip instead.
Despite her being a class winning driver and him being an award winning engine builder, when Jeff’s younger brother Steve tragically passes away during a street race, everything goes south for both of them.
To deal with the guilt, Jeff isolates himself and puts in the work – which only worsen his condition. He slowly begins to crawl out of his grief and begins attending to his responsibilities. This leaves Lisa to try and control the pack of hot rod youngsters who are in need of an outlet to their aggression.
They are fighting an uphill battle though, as Jeff and detective Ben have a ton of time constrictions. Logan, Ben’s boss is overwhelmed with complaints from the community and attempts to enforce a ban on hot rods and close the drag strip.
Lisa’s challenges are escalated by new arrogant town resident Bronc Talbot Andrew, who makes things difficult for both the kids and the police – and in the process, makes unwanted moves toward the now single Lisa.
After their mutual friend, Flat Top Gorshin, almost gets hurt while playing chicken, Lisa and Ben decide to withdraw Jeff from his depression, and make him target his energies towards helping his mates instead.
Just when it seems like the storm clouds are slowly disappearing, a scorned Talbott appears in his Oldsmobile 88 and shoves Jeff and Lisa into their ’55 Thunderbird, forcing them into a mountain race that could end horribly. Is there a way out of this latest crisis for the couple, or will the race mark the bitter end of their passion for hot rodding?
A classic simple flick from the past, Hot Rod Girl chronicles the tale of rebellious hot roders clashing against authority. A movie that is filled with the laughter and gaiety of a 70-year-old B-movie, it features unnatural dialogue, unreasonable drama and a whole lot of overacting. This strangely manages to enhance the viewing experience given one checks their brain at the entrance. The drag racing scenes of the movie were shot at the now-abandoned San Fernando Raceway and include dozens of amazing customs and hot rods long before they were fancifully referred to as ‘traditional’.
