The new Netflix film, Holiday Joy, caught me by surprise. So, when I was watching it, the title didn’t catch my attention, rather the description did. When reading, there was a line that stated, The grass is always greener on the other side which led me to believe that it would be some kind of family drama. That’s how it appeared in some of the pictures I had seen from the film as well, but I didn’t watch the trailer.
It turns out, it was a Christmas movie with the ordinary Christmas motif of magic and the true meaning of Christmas. It’s hardly anything fresh. Also, the film was released as a 2017 film, yet IMDB states that it came out in 2016. So once more, it’s new to people like me who use Netflix, but definitely not for anyone who has already seen it.
Joy (Bailee Madison) would give anything to have the life of her neighbor. Eve (Natalie Ganzhorn) goes on runs with her father, while her sweet mother stays home. To her wishing to be part of her family would be a dream. The family that she is living with consists of her father, two brothers, and a dog. After her mother left the family, her father shifted into what can only be described as a downward spiral. Right now, she is left with all the responsibilities, and everything feels like it’s crashing down around her. Not many people appreciate her, and no one cares about how she is feeling.
So, when she is accidentally run over by a car, courtesy of her nice neighbor, she grimly wakes up to see that her life has changed. Now she is the head of the school volleyball team, is dating the hottest guy in school, and has a wardrobe full of chic clothes. As if that was not enough, Joy also gets two loving and rich parents. It’s as if she is a whole new person. The only difference is she is still called Joy and has to now babysit Eve, her underachieving sister.
Initially, she enjoys every aspect of the happy family, but she starts to understand that it’s not as perfect as it seems, and everyone has their struggles. Also, she understands that she is connected to her real family and does not wish for them to suffer.
Nothing new, but well well-executed and soothing. If you like Christmas films, it’s worth watching.
