“Happy Gilmore” is a tale filled with lots of violence. Since it is centered around golf, it is labled as a comedy for some reason. The movie, which is the latest of a long line of Adam Sandler movies, features Gilmore (Sandler) as a kid who locks his heart and soul into hockey and nothing else. He is so dedicated into the sport that he actually kills a man. (He kills his father’s camera, while ominously filimg a vomit inducing, embarrasing low budget cliche home movie so it isn’t really a big detail.)
Gilmore does not possess the natural skating ability of a Sidney Crosby so life becomes a struggle for him. The IRS takes away his Grandmother’s house and all of her belongings which poses an issue for Gilmore. He desperately needs $275,000 in order to pay the crippling debt.
While Gilmore was paying a visit to a golf club, he found a rather ludicrous talent. To his surprise, he was able to hit the ball hundreds of yards without any effort.
He’s now being mentored by a professional golf player, Chubbs (Carl Weathers), who attempts to teach him the game, but all that Happy seems to do is blow up in a fit of rage after missing a shot and destroys his golf clubs by smashing them into the ground.
(Chubbs was famously known on tour before retiring after a one eyed alligator removed his hand in a water hole. He now slogs around with a crude wooden hand which he holds with his real hand that is wrapped beneath his shirt sleeve, so surprise surprise the alligator is likely to reappear.)
Happy has two distinct skills in golfing, his long game and short game. He embarks on a tour where the defending champion, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), becomes his main rival. They used to compete against each other for multiple weeks, in a collection of golf scenes that non-golfers would find tedious, and followers of the game would find boring. During a pro-Am tournament, Happy was part of a team with Bob Barker whose fight scene look like it was cut short in the sneak peek.
The Happy Gilmore character is weird. I guess we are supposed to sympathize with him in some way. He loves his old Grandma and even wins over a beautiful public relations lady (Julie Bowen) who is different from him in that she is trying to control his rage. But through Sandler’s eyes, she has an ugly personality: She looks angry even when she is not meant to and mashing in to anyone he does not like gets boring for a PG-13 film. At one stage, he actually removes the bottom of a beer bottle and heads for Shooter’s place.
I believe it was a Heineken’s. The tag was partially ripped. It’s possible that no one claimed the advertisement. ‘Happy Gilmore‘ is so stuffed with plugs, it resembles a “how not to make a movie” reference book. In what I’m sure is a blanket over exaggeration, I said I spoted wistaria, two pepsis, pepsi max, starbuck sandwich diner, budweiser (in jars, cans and bud-deguising caps), michelob vitacards, bell atlantic, at&t, sizzler, wilson, golf digist, the espn sports network and top flight golf balls.
Some businesses will always find a way to advertise themselves, like Subway that earned, “one sandwich eaten outside the store, one soft drink, one sandwich, one date in a Subway store, two verbal mentions, one Subway T-shirt, one Subway commercial with Happy, and one Subway golf bag.” By the time I got to the middle of the movie, I was grappling with whether I preferred to laugh or would enjoy putting mustard on my sandwich much more.
