The documentary Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods, produced by Respect! Films and directed by Patrick Meaney, has not yet been released and is expected to come out on December 15. Prior to writing this, I was able to watch the screener and I must say, it is quite impressive and well crafted. There was certainly a lot of effort putturt in by the filmmakers to get such extensive access to Morrison and his family. For someone like me, who has read quite a bit about Morrison, I wasn’t really expecting him to be this interesting, but this documentary feeds the interest of even the most experienced Morrison scholars. I will simply say, that this documentary paints a very entertaining picture of the man himself.

Shrouded with mysteries, it is easy to forget that Grant Morrison is a real man, someone who loves music, has a wife, and deeply misses his father. The man is actually alive and his alive legend which he created, is absolutely fascinating. However, Talking With Gods provided me with an opportunity to see through to Grant Morrison, Like every other person, for the first time. This is why Meaney’s film is powerful, he doesn’t view the otherworldly man as a divinity figure, whilst there does seem to be blind admiration in the interviews conducted with critics and other creators, it appears like Meaney is reporting a preexisting bias, rather than concocting one in post-production. As a result, not only does it provide a clear picture of how his work has shaped the lives of an entire generation of creators, but also explains the themes and ideas encompassed in Morrison’s work to his childhood and daily life.

Morrison’s work is undeniably fascinating, and as someone who studies him closely, I was pleased to see there was new content for me. Superhero comic books were astonishing to him because they offered a stunning alternative to the bleak reality narrative he was exposed to as a child. It met him at a time when he was battling the feeling of hopelessness brought on by nuclear holocaust and death being right over the horizon. His childhood was mostly filled with mentally dealing with the nuclear specter, and what gave him hope were the comics that painted existence in a light where the apocalypse was substituted with heroism. For example, there is thematic material in Final Crisis: Superman Beyond that has a link with Morrison’s childhood in which his parents were heavily involved in the anti bomb movement. Morrison almost flawlessly captures the feeling of superman beyond where superman ventures to the Monitor’s world which is filled with fear and despair and replaces the prophecies with a narrative of hope; a story of a baby boy sent off from a dying planet.

The documentary provides in depth analysis about his creation processes; various interviews with different artists provide details on how he approaches writing and how magic, drugs and writing intermingle. Listening to Cameron Stewart, Frazer Irving, Chris Weston, Steve Yeowell, Jill Thompson, and all the others discuss their very different approaches to the collaborative creative process with him is simply delightful. Furthermore, Mark Waid and Geoff Johns, co writers of newspaper comic strips, also appeared on screen. However, I bet all drama junkies would mourn the fact that there was no segment about the dispute with Mark Millar.
