Nice opening caption and background music that leads the viewer to a standup comedy and imbibes great thoughts about the whole thing. If that is truly possible, who are you going to take advantage of? What can I say? I think it’s great! I’m sure people found it interesting because it has a humorous edge and everyone loves Ghost Busters that film franchise has stood the test of time. And I’m sure many people will be excited to see the new Ghost Buster film titled “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” Much anticipation was drummed up as American director Gil Kenan released a teaser trailer for the film this year. He is also the producer because it does not make sense not to be one.
I also find this concept very entertaining because the Spengler family role is being transitioned into a more complicated environment. They try to adapt to the new family structure of togetherness and collaboration, all while repackaging the original brand and returning it to the fans. As a father-daughter duo, this dynamic shift introduces completely new challenges for the film’s protagonists that many audiences may not be used to. What makes it even more interesting is the plot revolving around Duality. It begins deep in the early 1900s as firefighters responded to a fire break which put the new characters in a difficult situation since they had not faced anything remotely similar till that time.
As a child of Ghost Buster fans, I grew up watching those movies and I can absolutely relate to the expectations people have when approaching a new film release. From what I know Icey Gary, aka Ray Stantz, is probably the best Ghost Buster and I mention him because he is a fan favorite. What excites me the most about the new film is the fact that I’ll finally be able to experience something intriguing for the first time whilst engaging with the new characters in a familiar environment.
For those who watched “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, it is fun to note how this should have prepared us for the movie. And indeed it doesn’t go far to disappoint. It is more of a sequel than it is a remake. The spirit is the same as that in the first film: the characters, the concepts, the lore, and of course the action. The character Mckenna Grace portrayed in this flick is Phoebe, the star of this movie once again (same assertive attitude from Afterlife). Now, Mckenna is a high school girl who got booted from the Ghostbusters for having too many damn years to be a Ghostbuster, or at least that’s what they said. It’s a nice touch. Personally, I loved all of Phoebe’s jokes, though I’m biased; I’m a science geek! Paul Rudd was exceptional and Finn Wolfhard did exactly what was required of him, which was not much. Even Kumail Nanjiani’s character and type of humor were appreciated. Strange as it may seem, it somehow goes well with the film.
However, because of this reason and since she cannot partake in further missions, the time available to Phoebe is significantly increased, and thus focuses on how she can belong to this new family.
An unusual scene unfolds when Phoebe is seen playing chess all alone outdoors. Suddenly the opponent’s chess pieces take off and begin having fun with her, and she appears indifferent that there is a spirit interacting with her. She meets Melody, a teenage girl who died in a fire a few decades back. This dynamic poses an interesting end ironic question where killers are uppermost ghostbusters, so how can they be a friend to one of them?
The director does a good job of keeping up with the tradition of the first film, combining sights and sounds from the original film and its setting with today’s devices and contemporary days. The visuals and CGI in this film are amazing. Ghosts look good but I think the prism has a good sense; even Melody’s ghost is stunning. She enkindles a little fire every now and then which serves as a reminder of how tragically and prematurely she died.
Two of its deficiencies lay in having an overly expansive cast. It appears burdensome because screen time for the number of characters is difficult for the film to take off. Maybe a longer screen time would have made both of them shine brighter. The plot is unoriginal as indeed it is cliché but the screenplay is racy enough to find it interesting.
It was interesting to learn about its origins in intergalactic warfare while seeing it change throughout the movie. It surely does pay off in that third act. I was not anticipating certain horror processes to get in the way as much as they did. A few of the scares were really well delivered.
The film, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ is an entertaining ghost-busting adventure that has lots of action. It is a very good blockbuster movie at its heart about family and combines the franchise with potential new fans. A must-watch!
