The reappearance of Gen X Cops is a highly anticipated event, however, this time they have labelled the film as Gen Y Cops. after watching the movie, there are a lot of “whys”. For instance, Why haven’t we heard about Y2K and Jack (Nicolas Tse and Grace Yip)? Why has Christy Chung resigned from her position as the overly optimistic police chief and performed the worst in her career? Why are the female characters dull and uninteresting (Maggie Q, Rachel Ngan)? Why are the acting and special effects so bad? And finally, Why is Edison Chen the main character instead of Stephen Fung and Sam Lee? Why did Paul Rudd, an American actor, accept this role for the movie and why was his acting talent nowhere to be found in this movie? And finally, why did Benny Chan want to make this poorly created-sequel?
The bigger, worse Gen Y Cops get rid of the overblown commercialism present in the first film for a film which is almost a comical version of modern-day action movies. Match (Fung) and Alien (Lee) are assigned to protect a technology convention for the local police, which they are unhappy about.
All is not right when US robot RX-1 goes out of control, all thanks to wicked software engineer Kurt (Richard Sun), who is furious he lost control of his project to the US Government. His plan is meticulous; he wants to seize RX-1 and auction him off to the highest bidder. For this nefarious plan, he would require the help of his friend Edison (Edison Chen), who has recently started working with Match and Alien.
Kurt’s scheme includes using the worst “street” English possible and apparently he is modelling after Rufio from Hook. Richard Sun is blisteringly awful in the role of the bad guy Kurt, and he is just crying out to be dubbed into another language. Edison Chen does considerably better than Sun, although his ‘street’ English is still horrendous. While the two wannabe street punks go toe-to-toe, the cops chase the other guys in fact, the FBI agents are in pursuit of the rest, led by a blond Paul Rudd. These guys in the FBI really do not have a clue what the procedure is and proceed to go wild in HK. Maggie Q stars as the FBI Agent Jane, and she can possibly be the most boring newly introduced female character in the year 2000. Rachel Ngan does not seem to be any more charismatic in her debut performance with Yeng Cops as she loses her partner to the Gen-Y Cops in an attempt to add another girl to the project. What is even sad about all this is that Grace Yip as Y2K was 300 times more interesting than these women, not that she was even remotely interesting to begin with. A sigh would be appropriate right about now.
I should clarify first, that I do not consider this one of the worst films ever made. Gen-Y Cops is extraordinarily silly and entertaining at the same time. The different action scenes are very enjoyable, and Fung and Lee are quite pleasant and entertaining together. Although Lee goes bananas in his scenes, he does manage to be funny and he is the one who saves the movie in the end. For all the shortcomings that the movie has, Gen-Y Cops does have some funny moments. Although the movie is an outrageous B-grade movie, it certainly is a step above the even worse movies available for those looking for 100 minutes of mindless fun.
