As per Ashley Berry’s memoir termed “Waiting for Rainbows” Four chronicles the life of one couple grappling with tragedy and infertility. Starring Meghan Carrasquillo, Spencer Breslin, Stacey Dash, and Taryn Manning, the film is a slow burn but delivers on the emotional spectrum. So be sure to grab your tissues.

Four starts off with a montage of dated home videos spanning from 2006 to 2009 featuring introductions of cast members and a romance blossoming which feels more like the trailer of a movie. It’s fascinating but the opening is a bit unusual in that it has the feel of a movie’s credits. And the font is terrible.

Focusing on the plight of adoption, the film does well in depicting the couple’s journey as they try to traverse the grueling road to parenthood. Audiences get to witness the gamble of parental love and care which makes adoption a touchy affair and the pain of knowing that it’s not an unconditional guarantee that people change their minds versus feeling realistic.

Four gives off an impression of a collage, as it manages to portray an emotional story in situations filled with sentiment. The film is shot in chapters; at some moments, it feels like watching a documentary or a family reality show. Though the plot is basic, the performances bring something fresh to the table.

Meghan Carrasquillo (What Lies Behind the Walls) portrays Berry, a woman struggling with infertility, with high emotion and realism. You can feel her struggle and pain come through the screen. Breslin (The Santa Clause 3) portrays Berry’s husband Cal as a wifely gentle and kind as well as vulnerable man. The narrative also benefited from supportive performances by Dash (Cluess) as social worker Beth and Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black) as the Gynaecologist.

It was a bit too much with relentless somber orchestral music. I required a more uplifting sound which provided some positivity. The film is indeed sad sometimes there is too much melancholy. The couple and their son should have provided more depth and happiness to the story, to explain why they would adopt and attempt to have another child.

And suddenly, just when they seem to portray the ideal family the plot pulls away from that cliche in the last act. It’s hard to believe that after everything they’ve been through, these two people are together.

The end of the film is a cliche but still delightful and heartwarming. Four concludes with a vigorous quote from the original author, a montage of home footage, pictures captured with the true couple, and their children. Proving that love family, and being loved, are what truly matters in this world.

Four is a film that inspires someone to keep pursuing their dreams. The strong pro-adoption message is inspiring and something that many people need to be told if they are finding themselves in that situation. It is a film that captures hope ambition and dialogue. Four is a new drama that needs to be viewed, and with the emotional impact it provides it is a must-watch.
