The Italians were first to strike, rushing the boldly titled Alien 2: On Earth into theaters less than a year after the first one released. Luigi Cozzi’s Contamination followed. And who can forget the Roger Corman produced Galaxy of Terror? That was released in 1981 and he followed up with Forbidden World in 1982, which was yet another knock-off.
Both Corman Productions fascinates in their own ways. Galaxy of Terror has more apathetic imitation of Alien, but it’s cast includes Robert Englund and Sid Haig, and young servants such as James Cameron and Bill Paxton were around. Despite also being known as Mutant and Subject 20, Forbidden World is way more captivating of a film during its 40th anniversary celebration this week.
In Corman’s style, he chose on impulse that during shooting of Galaxy of Terror he would want to make use of a space ship interior before the set got dismantled. He told Allan Holzman, who had edited some of his films and wanted to direct, he had a couple of days to come up with a prologue that was to be filmed over the weekend, the rest could be done later.
Holeman envisioned the idea of a “Lawrence of Arabia in space,” however Corman thought this was too expensive, so they settled on something more along the lines of Alien. Jim Winooski (Chopping Mall, Beachmaster 2) and R.J. Robertson (Beachmaster 2) worked on a script inspired by Corman’s Attack of the Crab Monsters that earned them a story credit. Later on, a newcomer by the name of Tim Curnen was assigned the task of writing the screenplay.
A potent observing and swinging image transitions into the ship cockpit notoriously known as the Forbidden World. In the cockpit, an android called SAM-104 commands the spaceship and is the above-mentioned fusion of stormtroopers and cyclones. When an emergency signal gets triggered, the movie plot begins. Uncommon to many movies releases today, this particular scene is paired to classical music with quick snapshots from later in the movie for effect.
Informs Commander SAM, who is in charge, draws attention from Mike Colby, who is being played by Jesse Vint (Silent Running). He wakes up from his cryogenic sleep only to learn that his flight plan has been altered. He now has to fly to the deserted planet of Xarbia to help with the accident at a high-security research center that has a genetic engineering program in place to develop a sustainable food source. That is the reason why he is being rerouted.
When Colby reaches his new destination, he is welcomed on ground level by Dr. Gordon Hauser, who claims to serve as the lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Glaser the V and more recently, June Chadwick who serves as the specialist in genetic synthesis as well as Tracy Baxter, the lab intern, Dawn Dunlap, and Dr. Cal Timbermen the chief in charge of bacteriology, Fox Harris, Repo Man. Along with these, Colby also meets Jimmy Swift, the lab tech which Michael Bowen Kill Bill, Brian Beale who is an electrician Ray Oliver Childs Play and finally, Richards Scott Paulin, the head of security and Earl a Teen Wolf.
A malfunction during one of the experiments has led to a genetic mutant called Subject 20 running rampant in the space station. Colby wants to eliminate it and go back home (“If it’s not one of us and it’s moving, just shoot.”), but his colleagues persuade him to assist in containing the problem. Subject 20, like the Xenomorph from Alien, draws inspiration from its life cycle because it is a metamorphic. It is largely shrouded by darkness and rapid cuts, and its complete form is too ghastly to see.
