“For Love or Money” is starred by Michael J. Fox, one of the most beloved stars in the movieworld. This movie is romantic comedy so lightfweight that his charm has to carru the entire enterprise. Take away the innate allure of both Fox and his love interest Gabrielle Anwar, and what you are left with wouldn’t even be enough to fill 22 minutes of sitcom.
The setup explains what should occur in ‘For Love and Money,’ but the movie proceeds while pretending it is not aware. The plot centers around Fox as the concierge of a hotel in New York who is in love with a sweet but innocent mistress of a millionaire. Who do you think the hero is? Some attempts are made on expanding this premise which must have been old in Chaplin’s age by putting in hotel’s operating details in the background. But there too no attempts are made to be original or observant. Some corridors are shown, with the bellman who is ancient and the manager who is snooty; it’s agreeable that all that there is to know is that concierges trade tickets to drama performances in Central Park. But, it is not about the hotel, it is about some old plot sets. Fox is Doug Ireland, the concierge at the hotel where everyone needs special treatment. One of them is Christian Hanover, a pompous rich man, plays unashamedly with a beautiful but naive Andy Hart. Doug’s heart goes pitter pat the moment he sets eyes on Andy, but there is an issue, he cannot act due to Hanover being a heavy tipper.
Moreover, Doug’s vision is blazing. He wishes to build a hotel on an island which is off Manhattan, and he has already bought an option to the rights. Right now, he needs a backer. Thankfully Hanover plays along while simultaneously stringing him along. Doug knows Andy has a fondness for him. He also knows how adoringly the married millionaire is cheating on her. But then again, if Doug wins his love, he loses out on his hotel.
And there’s nothing else. The film recalls an era when life was much more considerate; it could have easily been a Sandra Dee comedy back in the 1950’s.
There is nothing in it that is sharp, original, or intelligent. Gabrielle Anwar puts in a nice appearance (you may remember her from “Scent of a Woman”) and there seems to be an attempt, far from enthusiasm, to build up some slapstick in one scene at the summer home of this millionaire.
Nonetheless, “For Love or Money” is the kind of movie that you walk into, take your seat, and as it dawns on you, it seems as though you have arrived right at the beginning of the film.
