Finding Tony

Finding Tony is an independent project that has been directed by Raven Magwood Goodson for the first time ever and her main actor is an NBA star Anthony Davis who is also the executive producer of the film. The film follows the story of a widowed NBA player named Tony, who sets out on a quest to find more meaning in life after some tough experiences in life. The film follows Tony as he battles grief and alcoholism, his journey in loss, tolerance to pain, and emergence. It is a defining story of a man battling with his demons and trying to start a new life after many hardships.

Tony had a good amount of rage towards quite a few things in life. Art also runs on the same plane sometimes,” says Actor Stephen Bishop, who was cast as Tony in the film. ”At that moment in time, I found myself in a very short span in my life that I could share some emotions of mine with Tony. I consider that it was a real chance for that to be somewhat of a catharsis for me.”

Tony sinks deeper into depression and develops an alcohol addiction after the brutal death of his wife. After being arrested for DUI, he starts accepting that he will have to work but with reluctance, as a coach of a junior college women’s basketball team. That’s a hard initiation, more so when Destiny (Raquel Justice) comes in. The fostered heroine is quite a good basketball player but quite too feisty for her own good. But despite the clashing personalities, they learn from one another and help them to discover their respective destinies.

I think that ever coaching a women’s team helped Tony’s character development to some degree. I think it mellowed him and made it possible for him to stop running away from his feelings as David would put it. He isolated himself in that dark place and tried to cope with everything on his own. They allowed him, and they helped him and encouraged him to come out, remarks Bishop.

Bishop states that one of the greatest weaknesses of men in leadership positions is the public spectacle of exposing emotions, especially vulnerability. He went further and stated that the women were able to tame him a bit and show him that being vulnerable is not a bad thing. This made him improve and be strong. Vulnerability isn’t weakness, and it takes courage to be able to be so vulnerable and wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve.

All the participants involved felt they were winning whenever they were working on film and art. In fact, the independent film was recorded in just 17 days, which is quite astonishing considering the final product. There were times when the cast and crew. Most of them managed to do so by coordinating resources and expertise among themselves in order to get the work done.

“I just want to see how a person like Raven and somebody like SB (Stephen Bishop) and myself get together with the money that other people have and then see what comes out. Because as much as we understand that the film is being made on a shoelace budget, there is our audience and when they see the film, they expect it to be like a Star Wars. There is a day when we can be unshackled and all that we have to think about is being inventive. The words come from Dr. Daniel who is David Banner.”
