I was sorely disappointed by Far Cry and just five minutes of it was enough for me to determine that it is like any other Uwe Boll’s film. To most people, building on the foundation of Uwe’s work, and after observing the first five minutes of Far Cry, I can understand the disappointment. Some of these trademarks include Generic set designs, overly violent deaths alongside horrendous dialogue, and a camera in the wrong place. These trademarks are true marks of a Herr Boll great film. Unfortunately, Holocaust’s trademark was only present in the first five minutes of the film. The rest of the film’s storyline teetered on absolute boredom. Far Cry, on the other hand, did have a moment or two that brought me back to the previous five restores’ greatness but they were too few and far between to make a noticeable difference.
Without a doubt, the worst of Herr Boll’s does portray is when he tries to get serious. When he decides to portray a more calm side rather than his ‘batshit insane’ side, it almost reaches the same level of bad. The movie begins with a great bang, the first five minutes are absolutely berserk, and the remainder of the screen time is accurate. These glimpses of absolute insanity are what make the viewer unable to stomach the other parts of the film. The flashes stand out way too much from the rest of the boring normalness portrayed in the film.
Maybe the reason for the neutrality of Far Cry can’t be pinned on the cast, or on anyone else who worked in the production of this film, even. Uwe Boll is the sole person to blame for the failures of Far Cry. He is a director who has the ability to craft outrageous films that are entertaining, corny, and absolutely awful in the most awesome way possible. With Far Cry, what he has produced is a stock, uninteresting, and somehow restrained mundane and boring movie that made me feel like it was work watching the damn film. I am positive that most people will not accept my primary assessment of Herr Boll, but imagine I do know what the man is capable of. I know about the fun that could be had with his movies, and that is the painful part, in this outside of random moments, Far Cry wasn’t anywhere as entertaining as it was supposed to be.
I dislike the sunk cost fallacy that comes with wasting time spent on a film, but that is how I felt after I finished with Far Cry. I did not have any ‘fun,’ there was no ‘entertainment,’ and, most importantly, the film didn’t feature any of the bizarre antics typical of the best Uwe Boll films that I love. Far Cry stagnates on the screen, refusing to exceed the boundaries of an average action film; something that I definitely do not expect, let alone want, from an Uwe Boll movie. In any case, Far Cry is not something most people will wish to even see, and cordially speaking, Far Cry is not an Uwe Boll movie that should be wasted time on.
