You might constantly find yourself pondering if the information being presented to you in the movie isn’t just another conspiracy theory; however, this movie, revolving around the cover-ups of the US-Iraq war, does a deep dive into the world of fiction and fact. If you’re a conspiracy theorist like me, you will be more than willing to accept everything presented in the film that fueled my imagination. The movie is intensely paced, however, the drama in the movie is slow paced in the beginning, but culminates tremendously. It is also blended with the action-packed adventure of how fiction is created in the sphere of nonfiction drama, set in a realistic backdrop. I mean, we can’t totally write it off as fiction. Doug Liman, the director, does a fantastic job, and the film stars do a terrific job bringing the story to life. Regardless of whether it’s fiction or not, the film has great cinematic value and is a delight to watch on DVD.

In this case, it throws out hints as to whether the movie is based on facts, Fair Game, and Valerie Plame’s life. Even though it is interesting to speculate about the real essence of the movie, most of the themes are incredibly fascinating. The rise of WikiLeaks has portrayed the true events of government lies, and due to that, they were in line when Fair Game came out. During the US Iraq war, the actions of the country were highly controversial, and this movie sheds light on those events.

I have always been an admirer of Frederick Forsyth’s novels. He constructs fiction based on an event or a political incident in such a manner that it is plausible and riveting at the same time. Although his books are action-packed and considerably faster than the pace of this movie, Fair Game is still constructed on the same skeleton of an entertainer.

Douglas Liman has also given us thrilling and humorous spying battles like those in the Bourne movies and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. However, while the strapline of Fair Game says ‘Wife. Mother. Spy’ it does not have an action-packed reading. At no time in the movie did they try to hide her identity as a wife and mother, and if anything else, they gave her being a spy equal, if not lesser, attention. You might not need to worry about the absence of action though, as the strongest emotions capture your attention.

Jez Butterworth (screenplay) has put in some effort when it comes to developing Valerie Plame’s (Naomi Watts) story into a decent screenplay. Even though the story moves at a snail’s pace, with Doug Liman’s direction, the viewer is always kept interested. However, this kind of slow storytelling is necessary for the main actors (Naomi Watts and Sean Penn) to add a bit of realism. Their transformation in terms of character is projected beautifully in relation to their great performances. It is a continuation of their story from 21 Grams.

If you have an interest in politics, especially with regards to the US-Iraq war, then this film will be fascinating for you. However, if that isn’t the case, then it shouldn’t matter because the film is an incredible work of fiction, and the way Sean Penn and Naomi Watts acted in it will leave everyone amazed. This one is a must-have on DVD.
