Millennium Films financed Edison for $37 million, and IIDV Productions provided additional funding through the German tax shelter VIP 3 Medienfonds. Millennium also oversaw sales to foreign distributors. At that point, the company was shifting from creating direct to video action and genre schlock to bigger budget projects. Edison was the fist production to be populated with an A-list cast. Their first series of mid to large budget productions, which in addition to 16 Blocks included The Black Dahlia, 88 Minutes, The Wicker Man, The Contract, and for some reason, were all hot critcal flops.
Once again, cashing on celebrity culture is fine, but Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Justin Timberlake, and LL Cool J starring together in a film produced by Millennium films incidentally made me wonder about the direction of cinema. Edison was meant to be a big movie, but it bombed. Its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival was the nail in the coffin for its reputation, as it had received the worst ratings and reviews imaginable. It baffled critics, and no one took it seriously because the film was released in the 2000s. Not long later, Sony claimed it to be their production and proceeded to shred it to pieces and sell it as a low quality direct to video. This was easily predicted after hearing the devastating results from test screenings, where people who were willing to go to the cinema were the primary targets.
Even though the movies got some funding from German sources, the film never got a theatrical release in Germany and it also became available on home video first in most countries. The movie had limited box office coverage in certain regions where it made $4,143,414 from several different buyers. Morgan Freeman received simple wages for two more straight to video Millennium films The Contract (2007) and The Code (2009). These awful films was the first movie of Justin Timberlake.
