Brett Bentman is the McDonald’s grillmaster of movie directors and here is why, his work is very clearly quantity over quality. It is not normal for someone to release fourteen movies in the first half of 2024 and for those films to actually have worth, and as it stands, Bentman has one whole film that rates over a 5 on IMDB in the past four years.
Doc Holliday stars Tom Zembrod, doing his best impersonation of Val Kilmer. Zembrod is a perfectly acceptable actor for made-for-TV movies like this and therefore I actually feel bad for the guy as he’ll pretty much just be referred to as the dollar store Val Kilmer. For a while I thought Zembrod was trying to do a ‘Kilmer’, poorly, but I soon realized he was trying to do a drunken Jack Sparrow.
Zombrod does an excellent job as an old west gunslinger in that he happens to be a colossal jerk who shits on just about everyone he meets and gets away with it because he has a better shot and shoots first. Doc Holliday gets picked up by Wyatt Earp (Derrick Redford) who offers him a shot at a new life which comes with a promise of a badge if he helps out with a simple ask.
Head out to Arizona, look for the fearsome Bridle Brothers and, as usual, finish off Hitler. The Bridle Brothers are referred to that way because of the horse themed incest they practice. Just kidding, they ride horses and stuff. Jeffrey (Billy Blair) and Jon (Stephen Brodie) both look like sleazy bastards fit for a western. Robert Keith is here as Pastor Willingham, there’s a duo called Bandit Billy and Bandit Willie.
The film’s most standout performance certainly comes from Pistol Paula as Paula Packing Pistol. Paula has had an extensive show business career and here, like that gymnastics girl in Jurassic Park, she does her role because she can. I must say I loved her pistol twirling routine and I am sure she was also there to advise the crew on gun handling.
In the end, Doc Holliday ends up being the stereotypical frozen pizza of films. It’s simply one of those films that you do not need to go out of your way to see, as there is nothing unique or outstanding about it. Nonetheless, if the scenario arose in which other people restrained you in a chair and threatened to shoot you in the head unless you watched the film, I suppose it is better than death.
