Like every other week, I’m interested in indie sci-fi films and today, I would like to feature an emerging indie actor who happens to be the boyfriend of my close friend and colleague Ashley. If I can recall, I put up an interview of Tim Jacobs back in 2013 when he was doing extra work for RIPD.

Tim has been one of my consultants for the script I am working on since the two protagonist characters are stage actors, so almost all of it requires scenes of a play. Therefore, I am more than willing to feature him on my blog now, hoping that this role will bring him into the mainstream film and/or television in the days to come. This time, Tim is the co-leading science fiction thriller actor in the Indie film District C-11.

District C-11 is a riveting sci-fi with unexpected plot twists. The story revolves around two policemen in a near-future Boston, where they are tasked with night patrol duties. The city is ravaged by corruption and a villain Stanton Creed. As the policemen get closer to the heart of the city’s problems, they find themselves asking two questions – What do you do? Do you join the adversary and become a part of the issue? Or do you risk your life in order to do what is right?

That certainly makes for a great storyline! I received the audition notice from several social media outlets and thought it was a good storyline. So I attended the open auditions and went on to read for the role of Grey Gideon. At the end of the first round of auditions, I was told by the judges that they were fond of my performance, but I was simply too tall. A few weeks later, I received a call telling me to return for another round of auditions. Once again, they provided me positive feedback, but were still uncertain about my height.

At the third and final callback, I was alongside an amazing actor (Nicholas DiMaio) and after some great readings with various scene partners, it seemed we were both left in limbo. After three weeks, while I was on call with another director, the director Wes Williams II reached out to me with the role and again explained why my height was restricting. After accepting the offer, I could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Grey is a fascinating character. Mostly, he is a good cop, a good partner, and good friend. He is driven by the law but also by the revenge that his parents’ death serves him. And with that, he is a good substance abuser. He also has some problems like refusing to let people get too close. His partner Trenton (Corey Spencer) is the only real exception to that rule. In the movie, things do not tend to go right for Grey as he wishes which gets a little bit messy.

So now that you’ve done some supporting work in big-budget films (RIPD), how has that experience been like on a smaller independent film but with a larger role? I have now done several works of big budget films and TV series such as Spotlight, The Girl on the Train, and Allegiant part 1, and it is always a gamble whether the set is really going to be cordial and well organized or if it will be extreme and disorganized. Not to name particular productions, but I have witnessed some of the most atrocious set management accomplished in the big budget movies. Fortunately, the crew of District C-11 and the most of the smaller movies i’ve worked on have been really professional. I know that I’m lucky because I have heard horror stories from many of my actor friends.

It is really exhilarating to have a more active part. You tend to get scheduled all the time (hair, make-up, rehearsals, etc), that when you get a break, you make the most of it. I enjoyed being involved in every part of the process where I worked closely with the director and Director of Photography (Rajah Samaroo) and discussing how to shoot and perform the scenes. It is a passion project for many because there are times when all the peripherals have been sent home for the night, and it’s just you and your scene partner left waiting in the freezing temperature for the lights to be set, or the lenses to be switched and all the props to be set up. You wonder what you are doing in that position, but assuming that you enjoy what you pursue, and trust in the project, those thoughts are short lived.
