The film ‘Into the Deep’ stems from the mind of David Beton, who also penned ‘The Hatton Garden Job’. Kate Cox makes her directorial debut in this film that has been termed a thriller by many, but in reality does not seem to fulfill the prerequisites of the genre given how it lacks thrills. While the acting and on screen performances are done very tastefully, the film into the deep fails to meet the marks of being labelled a ‘psychological mystery’ thriller. It makes one question whether mystery is able to overlap into the realms of thrilling.

The narrative appears to hone in on the constructs of the most recognizable characters, which are two to note. “Ben” an American tourist, portrayed by Matthew Daddario, gets the notion of speaking to the girl “Jess”, who is a desperate co owner of a well established store, a vital milestone for the harbor’s tourism. Imagine Ben too, while roaming about the town in an unheard place, sticking his neck into an English coastal harbor town and much to his surprise, peeping into the world of “Jess” who is attempting to make ends meet. Sophomore fascinations of new places always require an outlet and so a friendly chat with “The Tourist Guy” over a boring conversation incites a tussle followed by a great deal of revelry at a beach party, a little more intimacy on the yacht which transforms to benile a few hours later. He awakens separated from the chaos in the middle of the ocean. Through flashbacks and open nightmares she appears to be dwelling in a state of tumultore. The fragmented memories also appear to burden her, making the waterless expanse of nowhere seem like a nightmare. The sobering question at hand is if this is when the nightmare starts?

Only going back to our initial characters, Matthew Daddario plays a soothing character of a tourist and a seemingly cynical idealistic globetrotter.

There is something intangible in the cast that allows him to build an emotional rapport with Jess (or not?) rather rapidly, but Daddario quite astutely restrains any hints of treachery with an almost absent minded calm. I saw Ella-Rae Smith in a completely different light – a bundle of energy and fun, the younger, naïve, and much prettier version of what she actually is. Under her beautiful outward smiles, she deeply mourns something which she is very good at hiding. Jess has to make the disturbing reconciliation with the father who has moved on, and get rid of the internal grief she feels along with her beautiful outer smiling mask. But on the other hand, to any potential destructive divorce, well, separation should come first. However, in this case it appears to me that the poor innocent little moth has been ensnared by a fatal glare.

In addition to Matthew Daddario and Ella-Rae Smith, many others have done an outstanding job, and this remains nameless, but the level of suspense, horror, intrigue or thrills were simply not enough to catch and sustain my interest.
